| Qualifications: | EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ph.D. Degree (in hand by hire date) in Agronomy, Soil Science or closely related field, with emphasis on sustainable agronomic production of crops (but not limited to) alfalfa, cotton and alternative biofuel crops. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: - Experience in dryland and irrigated crop production, high pH soils, plant nutrition, crop rotations, pest management and integrated farming techniques for sustainable production. - Experience in Extension work and Extension programming is desirable. - Ability to interpret and make practical application of current agronomic research findings with county extension agents, agricultural producers, agribusiness, homeowners and the general public. - Ability to effectively interact, communicate (oral and written) and relate to people of all ages, incomes, education levels and ethnic backgrounds and development of informal and formal educational programs to meet their needs. | |||||
| Examples of Duties: | - Administratively responsible to the Department Heads of Extension Plant Sciences and Plant and Environmental Sciences departments.
- Responsible for an aggressive Extension program in agronomic crop production. - Interpret and disseminate current and relevant research findings for practical use by producers through mass media, publications, producer meetings, demonstration trials and other proven Extension methods. - Provide training and assistance to county agents and others on various cropping system issues including, but not limited to irrigation, fertility, crop rotations and pest management. - Maintain liaison and close working relationship with the NMSU Plant and Environmental Science and EPPWS departments, New Mexico Department of Agriculture, other State and Federal Agencies, the agricultural chemical industry and New Mexico commodity groups (e.g. NM Hay Assoc., NM Cotton Growers Assoc.). - Work cooperatively with other state Extension specialists, University researchers and County Agents in developing and implementing multi-discipline activities. - Work closely with NMSU forage specialists to conduct alfalfa programs and assist with dissemination of research results from alfalfa projects throughout the state. Help maintain relationships with alfalfa and other commodity groups. - Conduct an applied research program within your area of expertise in agronomy; emphasis on developing sustainable management practices relevant to the industries in the state as well as expanding biofuel industries. - Qualify for graduate faculty status and publish research results in peer reviewed journals and generate scholarly activities in a manner to maintain tenure track. | |||||
