DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
New Mexico State University is a Land-Grant, NASA Space-Grant, Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive, Hispanic Serving Institution (federal designation) with approximately 13,405 undergraduates and 3,321 graduate students on the main campus. The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences is the leading department in the college with respect to extramural funding ($3-4 million/year) and number of graduate students (60). About 29 faculty, both on and off campus, plus a large number of PhD level research associates and technical staff (about 25) assist in the research effort. The department is housed in a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility that is less than 10 years old. The department offers a B.S. in Agriculture (79 students majoring in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Soils), B.S. in Environmental Science (40 students, interdisciplinary), B.S. in Genetics, M.S. in Horticulture, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Plant and Environmental Sciences. Campus teaching and research emphasize urban horticulture, plant genetic improvement, and soil/environmental sciences. Off campus research includes traditional cropping systems, sustainable agriculture, forestry, reclamation, waste management, and other areas. Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS:
We are searching for candidates with vision, energy, and enthusiasm to provide innovative dynamic leadership to the department’s teaching, research, and service activities. Candidates must have attained the rank of Professor or equivalent with a doctorate in agronomy, horticulture, soil science or related field. Candidates must provide evidence of leadership including team-building skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and administrative experience. Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to recruit and mentor students from diverse cultures and recruit and mentor diverse faculty. Experience in fiscal and personnel management is crucial. Leadership skills to promote the department to the college, university, industry, granting agencies, government, and clientele are essential. Candidates must understand and have a strong commitment to the Land-Grant mission.
Examples of Duties: RESPONSIBILITIES:
The department head is responsible for all aspects of administration including fiscal management, developing and maintaining departmental facilities, faculty and program evaluations, and administering teaching, research and service programs at the main campus and several off campus locations. The department head is expected to exert visionary and effective leadership while fostering working relationships among faculty, staff, and off campus facilities to accomplish department goals. A commitment to strengthening support for teaching, research, and service is essential. The department head represents and serves as an advocate for the department and reports directly to the Dean and Chief Administrative Officer of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.
