Qualifications: The qualifications for the position of dean include an earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education and combined experience sufficient for tenure at the rank of professor in an appropriate department of the college. The successful candidate must provide leadership for the college and have a commitment to sustaining and enhancing excellence in teaching, research, and public service programs. A proven track record in leading a large complex organization; significant experience in university academic administration, teaching, and research is preferred (although other experience will be considered); program assessment experience; and the skills necessary to lead a college in a multi-cultural environment with a commitment to affirmative action and diversity. The candidate must have a deep concern for students and their education. Additionally, the successful candidate will possess the ability to provide creative leadership for a diverse and talented faculty and staff; and have a productive record of fundraising, economic development, working with private industry, budget management, and resource allocation. In addition, the candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to foster consensus building, and proven ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders, including legislators.
Examples of Duties: The Dean of the College of Engineering reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost and provides leadership and vision for the college. The dean leads the college’s academic, research and development efforts and oversees the technical, administrative, and support operations for the six academic engineering departments- Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Engineering Technology and Surveying, Industrial, Mechanical and Aerospace, and one specialist area in Engineering Physics. Currently, 432 graduate and 1,799 undergraduate students are enrolled in the college. The college offers five areas of study at the doctoral level, six at the master’s level, and 13 at the undergraduate level. Several of its multi-disciplinary programs have received national recognition. Further, the College of Engineering is in the top ten graduate programs in the nation for graduating Hispanic engineering students, in partnership with NMSU’s Physical Science Laboratory is ranked 10th in the nation for Engineering Research Expenditures by the National Science Foundation, is ranked 62nd in the nation by U.S. News and World Report for graduate engineering programs, and is in close proximity to Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories and White Sands Missile Range (see http-//engr.nmsu.edu/).
