(75% Teaching, 25% Extension) Department Description- The NMSU Plant and Environmental Sciences Department consists of 25 faculty members and has a broad based research/teaching program. There are approximately 107 undergraduate and 45 graduate students (MS and Ph.D.). The department has four areas of emphasis- 1) Horticulture, 2) Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, 3) Environmental Science, and 4) Soil Science. Some faculty members are located at six Agricultural Science Centers distributed throughout the state. | |||||
| Qualifications: | Ph.D. (in hand by hire date) in Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Science, Soil Science or closely related discipline is required with background and experience in one or more of the following areas- crop production, crop physiology, precision farming, agroecology, irrigated agriculture, or sustainable agriculture. Demonstrated abilities in teaching relevant courses are highly desirable. Possess strong oral and written communication and problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively with clientele groups, colleagues and the general public. Must consider interaction with undergraduate and graduate students an important part of an academic career. | |||||
| Examples of Duties: | The chosen candidate will be an active participant in the on-going, multi-disciplinary activities in Sustainable
Agricultural Research, Education and Extension for Small Farms. Teach courses related to crop production, cropping systems, and sustainable agriculture including organic production. Participation in academic advising of undergraduate and graduate students in allied areas is expected. Provide effective leadership and interface with research and extension personnel and small scale farmers in demonstrating and implementing sustainable crop production practices. Evaluate new technologies and cropping systems and disseminate information that will address crop management options and economical and environmental issues relevant to arid land irrigated agriculture. Applied research to develop production training and educational programs in sustainable crop production is encouraged and ability to publish in refereed journals. Other closely related duties may be assigned by the department head. | |||||
