POSITION CONDITIONS-

Qualifications: BASIC QUALIFICATIONS-
PH.D. in pomology, fruit production, or related field.
Ability to carry out independent field research on apples, grapes, stone fruits, small fruits, and other horticultural crops including design, management, analysis and interpretation of results.
Understanding and experience in IPM, organic, and sustainable methods preferred.
Ability and experience to develop educational programs in consultation with extension personnel and industry leaders.
Skills in written and oral communication, including ability to develop grant proposals.
Ability to cooperate with other people and work in multicultural setting.
Experience in fruit and specialty crop marketing desired.
Examples of Duties: RESPONSIBILITIES
Programmatic responsibility will align with the research and educational goals of the Alcalde Research Center and will be overseen by the Superintendent of the Agricultural Science Center at Alcalde, NM and the Extension project director. This is a tenure track position in the NMSU Plant & Environmental Sciences (PES) Department with administrative responsibility to the Head of the PES Department.

Research- Carry out applied research program on apples, stone fruits, grapes, berries, miscellaneous fruits, and other horticultural crops as needed; emphasis will be on developing profitable and sustainable (including organic production) management practices for northern New Mexico. Develop grant proposals and obtain extramural funding.
Should qualify for graduate faculty status and publish research results in peer reviewed journals in a manner to maintain tenure track.

Extension- Work with farmers to improve production, quality and profitability of fruit crops, including the incorporation of sustainable methods. Conduct educational programs and publish guidelines on proper variety selection, irrigation practices, fertilization, weeds, insects, diseases and marketing for northern New Mexico. Conduct and coordinate on-farm demonstrations. Work cooperatively with advisory committees, county extension faculty and specialists at Mexico State University and other science centers and with agriculture and agribusiness personnel of the area. Cooperative work with county extension faculty will include providing educational materials and in-service training.

The Agricultural Science Center at Alcalde is located approximately 30 miles north of Santa Fe, NM. The Center supports research and extension programs in sustainable agriculture for north-central New Mexico. The Center is comprised of 60 acres of land, 55 of which is irrigated by surface water.
