Agricultural Science Center, Tucumcari, New Mexico POSTION CONDITIONS: Ability to work odd hours as needed. Defensive Driver training required within three months after employment. Public pesticide applicator’s license required within one year after employment. | Qualifications: | - Bachelor’s degree in agriculture and 3 years experience or any equivalence of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the job.
- Advanced knowledge of irrigated farming practices and the care, treatment and feeding of beef cattle. - Evidence of good oral and written communication skills. - Ability to maintain accurate and orderly records. Preferred: - Ability to use independent judgment, initiative and analyze and resolve problems. - Evidence of working independently in positions of responsibility with minimum supervision. - Experience with personal computers. |
| Examples of Duties: | RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The farm superintendent, under supervision of the center superintendent, is responsible for coordinating and conducting farm and field operations necessary for the accomplishment of research project and center objectives. - Supervises, directs, delegates and evaluates work of assigned staff. - Assists in the performance of a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks relating to the operation of the center. - Prioritizes work requests from researchers and anticipates needs of projects. - Interacts with faculty and staff to keep them current on project status and/or requirements. - Keeps detailed records of labor and plot field work so that expenditures can be tracked by project. - Determines type and sequence of field operations and layout of projects to accomplish project objectives. - Monitors the safety of farm personnel and serves as the center safety officer. - Conducts and instructs others on equipment calibration, pest control and operation of irrigation systems, including furrow irrigation. - Oversees the maintenance of equipment and facilities at the center. - Performs related duties as assigned. |
