Special Conditions: Willing to travel 50 percent of the time, including extended overnight trips. Ability to work odd hours as needed and travel on short notice. Ability to work around bees, plant pests, and plants without adverse allergic reactions or chemical sensitivities. Territory of work assignments is subject to change with industry demands. Defensive driving training required within three months after employment. Driving record subject to investigation. Appropriately and professionally represent the department in the performance of duties.
Qualifications: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a related field. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form. Ability to maintain accurate and orderly records. Physical requirements include- ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs; and standing, walking, or driving for several hours at a time.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Degree in pest management or horticulture. A minimum of one years experience. Knowledge of regional crops, common horticultural plants. and the plant nursery industry. Experience with plant pest surveys, plant pest control, records maintenance, self-direction, and independent decision making.
Examples of Duties: The Inspector I is responsible for providing enforcement primarily for New Mexico’s Plant Protection Act and Pest Control Act to include-

1. Inspect plants and plant products at wholesale and retail business for insects, weeds, and diseases.
2. May perform apiary inspections.
3. Conduct plant pest surveys to support regulatory actions, issuance of federal phytosanitary documentation, and regional agricultural producers.
4. Assist on area-wide pest control programs.
5. Prepare inspection and survey reports as requested.
6. Interpret and explain relevant laws and associated rules to clientele and interested parties.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.
