| Qualifications: | The Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III (SDSS-III) and New Mexico State University are seeking a technical and data oriented astronomer for a position as SDSS-III Observer to conduct Survey observing at Apache Point Observatory (APO). SDSS-III is a multi-component extension to the SDSSII- Marvels, an exoplanet search program utilizing newly developed precision interferometer from the University of Florida to search 11,000 stars for Jupiter size planets; BOSS, an update to the SDSS-II spectrograph to search for Baryon Oscillations and test for dark energy and cosmic acceleration theories; Apogee, a new Near IR spectrograph from the University of Virginia to probe 100,000 stars around the galactic center; and Segue-2; which is a follow-up to the SDSS II, and will map 250,000 stars in the outer Milky Way. Observers are full scientific participants in the SDSS III; they are provided opportunities to undertake research programs and to take advantage of the SDSS-III collaboration’s network of scientific effort. Responsibilities include nightly operation of SDSS telescopes and instruments, monitoring the data streams and system performance, evaluating data quality and observing efficiency, and making decisions about observing plans. Work entails a non-standard work schedule, including daytime evaluation of system performance and planning of future observations. |
