| Qualifications: | Required - Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Public History, Museum Studies or related field and two years museum experience.
Collections management and/or exhibit development experience preferred. Although not required, a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field, together with a record of research and publication, is a plus. |
| Examples of Duties: | The University Museum of New Mexico State University seeks an energetic and effective curator, with excellent collaborative skills, who will implement high standards of museum practice in organizing and preserving the museum's archaeological, ethnographic, and historical collections (approximately 190,000 objects) and in developing innovative exhibits. Maintain accession, collections database, loan, and insurance records as well as condition reports and conservation assessments. Manage matters related to NAGPRA. Oversee collections development by coordinating acquisition of objects from donors. Arrange loan agreements, deeds of gift, exhibition contracts, and insurance coverage. Arrange for contracting of outside services such as conservation, packing, crating, handling, and transportation of traveling exhibits. Supervise internal and external movement of objects in the collections. Develop and implement an on-going plan to improve storage conditions of the collections, including a program of pest management. Facilitate research on objects in the museum's collections by effectively coordinating access to collections by faculty and students of the university as well as outside investigators. Develop an annual calendar of exhibitions based on interpretation of objects from the museum's collections as well as occasional rental of traveling exhibitions from other institutions. Train student assistants and volunteers and supervise their work in collections management and exhibit development and installation. Coordinate the membership of the Friends of the Museum as well as the use of Kent Hall as a venue for university-related activities. Work with the Director of the Museum, the Museum Educator, the Museum Public Programs Coordinator, and other museum staff in the day-to-day operations of the museum and on special projects, including pursuit of external grant funds for collections management and exhibition development. |
