New Mexico State University (NMSU) seeks a dynamic and visionary leader for the position of Dean of the College of Education. The Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost and has a central role in the University’s academic administration. Through the Academic Deans Council, the Dean actively contributes to decisions affecting the University at large as well as the College of Education. The Dean is involved centrally in issues including strategic planning, budget, curriculum, facilities, and research. The new Dean will provide vision and leadership to help guide this strong college toward increased national prominence and service to New Mexico. NMSU is a Hispanic-serving, doctoral/research-extensive, land-grant and space-grant institution. The service population includes New Mexico’s 22 federally recognized tribal nations. The university systems serves over 34,000 students including 14,698 undergraduate and 3,799 graduate students on the Las Cruces campus and over 15,000 students on four community college campuses. NMSU offers 81 undergraduate, 50 masters and 20 doctoral degree programs including 60 certificate, 57 associates and 2 education specialist programs. The College of Education has 75 full-time faculty and 82 part-time faculty. The Dean administers a $10.6 million state funded operational budget in addition to approximately $11.5 million in external funding to support research and scholarship endeavors. The College of Education is comprised of five departments- Counseling and Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Management and Development, Human Performance, Dance and Recreation, and Special Education/Communication Disorders. The college offers undergraduate degree programs of Bachelor of Arts in Dance, Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training Education, Bachelor of Science in Education—Majors in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education with endorsements in Bilingual Education, Business Education, Foreign Languages, General Science, Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Social Studies, TESOL; Major in Special Education; Major in Communication Disorders, and Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. The College offers ten master’s degree programs, four doctoral degree programs and two specialist in education programs. The College of Education is accredited by the National Council of Accredited Teacher Education (NCATE) and has been accredited since 1961. NCATE is one of the more rigorous accrediting agencies for professional schools and requires extensive internal review and preparation. | Qualifications: | Education:
An earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education in one or more of the education disciplines or a closely related discipline. Minimum Experience: The successful candidate will be eligible for tenure at the rank of professor within the college and will demonstrate experience with one or more of the national accreditation councils. Other qualifications include possession of a record of significant scholarly achievement, a history of success in promoting the goals of equal opportunity employment and five years of administrative experience at the level of department chair or higher. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate success in supporting undergraduate and graduate instruction, distance education, grant writing, fundraising and research. Excellent communication skills and a history of strong collegiality and cooperation with units across campus and with the community are desirable. |
| Examples of Duties: | An innovative/experienced candidate will be an engaged and skilled communicator; an energetic, progressive educator of academic distinction who will take initiative and provide leadership; and an accomplished facilitator of accreditation and program review processes. The Dean should have a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly or research accomplishments appropriate to academic appointment as full professor; a strong commitment to the academic values appropriate to the College missions of teaching, research, service, economic development; and a strong advocate for diversity. In addition, candidates should have appropriate administrative experience, preferably in a research university. The Dean will be expected to devote a substantial amount of his/her time to development activities. The Dean should have the highest standards of personal integrity and be committed to stimulating innovative and interdisciplinary programs. The Dean must be a compelling voice for issues in the College and be able to communicate the mission of the College to internal and external audiences.
