Biographical Summary: |
|
George Dickerson, horticulture specialist in the Extension Plant
Sciences Department, has focused the majority of his efforts on the
promotion, production and marketing of specialty crops in New
Mexico. Blue corn varieties he has developed were used to decorate
the Seeds of Change exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
from 1991 to 1993. His research and promotion of red raspberries and
blackberries have resulted in increased farm profitability for small
growers in New Mexico. His recent work with plastic mulches and row
covers on vegetables resulted in over a 50 percent reduction in
water application, decreased weed growth, and earlier production. He
also served on the original New Mexico Organic Commodity Commission
and is heavily involved in the implementation of backyard and
municipal composting programs. He was appointed New Mexico’s USDA
Community Gardening Coordinator in 2000 by Secretary of Agriculture
Dan Glickman. |
