Safety Classes

All classes offered are American Red Cross certified.

CPR/PRO Course

Gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing, cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses, including how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest, until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.

Prerequisites:
  • None
Cost*:
  • 75.00 + tax (not including textbook cost) CPR manual and mask are required for the course and can be purchased at the Aquatic Center.

Lifeguard Training Course

This course is designed to teach individuals the skills and knowledge required in order to develop effective lifeguarding systems at swimming pools. Course participants learn what it takes to be a professional lifeguard by learning:

  • Job responsibilities
  • Patron surveillance skills
  • Rescue skills
  • First Aid and CPR/AED skills
Prerequisites:
  • Candidates must be 15 years of age on or before the completion of the class.
  • Candidates must swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front; 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breath, kick and glide sequence; 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke. The 100 yards may be a combination of front crawl or breaststroke. (Note: There is no time requirement for this skill.)
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point while maintaining two hands on the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
  • Prerequisite skills are done the first day of class. Candidates who do not complete the prerequisite skills to the instructor's satisfaction will not be eligible to participate in the remainder of the course.

Lifeguard Instructor Course

To train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguarding and Shallow Water Attendant (all including first aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission and Basic Water Rescue courses. Instructor candidates will become familiar with GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow and the Water Safety presentations.

Prerequisites:
  • Be at least 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course.
  • Posses a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or passes a current National Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate.
  • Successfully complete the precourse session. This includes passing the precourse written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher for each of the three sections and demonstrating competency in the precourse skills and scenarios evaluation.
  • Course entrance requirements include: Have certification in Lifeguard Training (issued within the past 4 years), CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Swim 300 yards continuous (demonstrating 200 yards of front crawl and 100 of breast-stroke). Surface dive, retrieve a 10 pound brick, surface and swim 20 yards while carrying the brick in both hands. Demonstrate competency in ALL Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR skills.

Water Safety Instructor Course

The water safety instructor course focuses on training instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and hwo to evaluate participants' progress.

Prerequisites:

At least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course.

25 yards each of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke.

Butterfly for 15 yards.

Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)

Tread water for 1 minute.

Successfully complete the pre-course session.

Successfully complete the required number of practice-teaching assignments.

Score at least an 80 percent on the final instructor course written exam.

Cost: $150.00 +tax (not including cost of materials) * Payment is due on the first day of class after the successful completion of the pre-course session.
