Climbing Wall
Our Goal
At the NMSU Climbing Wall, our goal is to provide a safe, healthy and challenging learning environment with trained climbing wall staff to offer an exciting experience which will bring you back for more.
Interested in learning about climbing?
Even if you do not plan to climb, come visit our climbing wall and talk to our staff. We will be happy to provide information about climbing around Las Cruces. We will be organizing outdoor group climbing trips to areas like Hueco Tanks, TX, and Datil, NM.
Want to climb?
All registered NMSU students, faculty and staff may climb during normal operating hours at no cost. Community members are also welcome and can purchase a semester Climbing Wall pass for $180. The Climbing Wall can be reserved for group functions during non-operating hours. All climbers must sign a waiver and pass an orientation prior to using the NMSU Climbing Wall. If you are already skilled in climbing and belaying, you may opt to pass a skills check instead of attending a full orientation.
Wall Facts
Our wall is 25 feet high and 33 feet wide. Topropes are set on every wall. We are also equipped for lead climbing practice. Wall surfaces range from vertical to 45 degrees overhanging in our bouldering area. Our routes accommodate climbers of all ages and abilities.
Orientations
Group orientation sessions are offered on a regularly scheduled basis at the beginning of each semester. Private orientations are also available upon request when the Wall is open. An orientation teaches basic knot tying and belaying procedures as well as safety practices required at our Wall. You will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in tying a figure eight follow through with a safety knot, proper belaying techniques, and efficient use of climbing commands. Climbing Wall staff are happy to demonstrate or explain proper use of other climbing equipment not used for indoor climbing.
Equipment check-out
All necessary climbing equipment such as shoes are available for students and staff to use on a first come first serve basis. Use of personal equipment in the gym is permitted, but only ATC type belay devices may be used.
