ZOOS, PETTING ZOOS & ANIMAL FARMS

  • Alameda Park Zoo - Established in 1898, the Alameda Park Zoo is the oldest zoo in the Southwest. The seven acre zoo is home to nearly 90 different species and almost 300 animals. More than 40 displays that feature exotic and indigenous animals. Located on Hwy 54/70 at the intersection of 10th Street, 1321 N.   • Acheval Stables - Pony rides, petting zoo, lessons, and training. Located at 560 Los Arboles Verde Road,

  • Casa Grande Trading Post, Mining Museum & Petting Zoo - Open every day in the village of Cerrillos on Waldo Street, Cerrillos, NM (505) 438-3008.
  • Hillcrest Park & Zoo - Second largest zoo in the state. 10th and Sycamore, Clovis, NM (505) 769-7873.
  • Living Desert Zoo & Garden State Park - The Living Desert Zoo & Garden State Park features a captive living collection of native birds, mammals, and reptiles from New Mexico and the Northern Chihuahuan Desert area of West Texas and Northern Mexico.Carlsbad, NM (505) 887-5516.
  • Río Grande Zoological Park - Founded in 1927, the 64-acre Rio Grande Zoo offers visitor's a pleasant stroll highlighted by close encounters with more than 250 species of exotic and native animals. Popular species include seals and sea lions, gorillas, orangutans, elephants, polar bears, giraffes, camels, tamarins, koalas, Mexican wolves, mountain lions, monkeys, jaguars, zebras and rhinoceros. State-of-the-art exhibit design and eye-pleasing landscaping enhance zoo animal husbandry by creating naturalistic habitats complete with trees, grasses, water features and rockwork.   • Spring River Park & Zoo - Youth fishing lake, antique carousel, miniature train ride, and animals on display. A great time for the family. A great place for a picnic. 1306 E. College Blvd., Roswell, NM (505) 624-6760.
  • Victory Ranch - Petting and feeding ranch for alpacas from South America. Visitor center and gift shop. On NM 434, one mile north of Mora, NM (505) 387-2254.
  • Vista Hermosa Llama Farm - Vista Hermosa is a 5-acre rural hobby farm sharing the land with fields of corn, soybeans and alfalfa, that are beautifully strip-farmed all around. Come visit this unique operation. For more information contact gina@vistahermosafarm.com Corrales, NM (505) 898-0864.
  • Wildlife West Nature Park - Native flora and rescued, non-releasable wildlife in a 122 acre enhanced zoo and wildlife refuge. Fabulous array of animals to observe. 19 miles east of Albuquerque on I-40, exit 187. 87 N.   • Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary - Located in the Zuni Mountains, the refuge is home to 63 wolves and wolf hybrids, including Arctic, Timber and Tundra. FISH HATCHERIES

  • Alpacas de Santa Fe - Visitors are always welcome at this full time, working alpaca breeding ranch with over 50 alpacas! Alpacas are gentle animals which produce one of the finest fibers in the world. If you are interested in alternative livestock and fiber, you will enjoy the tour at our ranch. 29 Calvin Road, just south of Santa Fe, NM. Call for directions. (505) 471-9164.
  • Dexter National Fish Hatchery - Located in the heart of the Pecos River Valley, the Dexter National Fish Hatchery houses and protects endangered warm-water species of fish from the Southwest river system. The center is one of only seven technology centers, creating new technology and carefully analyzing fish genetics.

  • New Mexico State Fish Hatchery - Open daily 8am-5pm. Fishing pond & picnicking. Fishing license required. Near the historic Catwalk of Whitewater Canyon. Nearby population of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and various hot springs. Tourism information on their Web site. Glenwood, NM (505) 539-2461.
  • Lisboa Springs Hatchery - Oldest state trout hatchery. Visitor center. Located two miles north of Pecos on NM 63. Pecos, NM (505) 757-6360
  • Mescalero National Fish Hatchery - This hatchery is developing broadstock for the endangered Gila trout, and also holding the Rio Grande cutthroat trout (New Mexico State Fish). Run by US Fish and Wildlife Service. Instructional Visitor Center, walk through hatchery. Exit Highway 70 at mile marker 246, go on Eagle Drive (100 Ft), turn left on Apache Blvd. 0.3 mile, turn right on Rainbow Drive to Hatchery. 202 Trout Loop. Mescalero, NM (505) 671-4401.
  • Mora National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center - One of six fish technology centers in the nation. On NM 434 at mm two in Mora, NM (505) 387-6022.
  • New Mexico Fishery Resources Office - NM Fishery Resources Office manages entire fish communities emphasizing its efforts on native and endangered species. The NM Fishery Resources Office plays a key role in the development of much of wildlife in many communities. 2105 Osuna Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM (505) 761-4538.
  • Parkview State Trout Hatchery - Trout production, fishing at small lake. Two miles north of Tierra Amarilla, NM, off US 84.Chama Chambers of Commerce: (505) 756-2306 or (800) 477-0149.
  • Red River State Trout Hatchery - Trout production, fishing in Red River or Rio Grande. Four miles south of Questa, NM on NM 522 (505) 586-0222.
  • Rock Lake State Hatchery - Raises fish for planting in lakes. Located two miles south of Santa Rosa, NM, on River Road. (505) 472-3690.

AQUARIUMS and EXHIBITS

  • Albuquerque Aquarium and Rio Grande Botanic Garden - The aquarium exhibit features a
    coral reef, moray eel-tunnel and 285,000-gallon shark tank. At the Botanic Garden, stroll amidst formal walled Spanish and English gardens, or in glass conservatories showcasing desert and Mediterranean plants. 2601 Central NW, Albuquerque, NM (505) 764-6200.
