When Gen. Ulysses S. Grant won the Civil War for the Union in 1868, the people of the Mimbres Valley honored him by naming their newly formed county after him - Grant County. Later history included: silver was discovered and folks flocked the area; Mimbres Valley Indians created some of the most beautiful pottery in the world; U.S. Army Buffalo Soldiers were very active at Fort Bayard, protecting citizens from Apachae Indian attacks; and copper was discovered. Grant County is chock full of history and a favorite destination for enjoying outdoor sports of all kinds, great festivals and fabulous events.
