Scenic byways, ghost towns, historic mining towns, forts,
churches, museums, fishing, boating sports, hot springs, public
baths, fine dining and more. This is a just a quick glimpse into
the interesting world of Sierra County. Recorded history dates
back to 1581, when Captain Francisco Sanchez claimed the area
for the King of Spain. The county itself was created in 1884,
by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature. It is named for the
nearby Sierra de los Caballos.
