Bring the camera and the visiting relatives to a unique New Mexico
adventure!
- Mescalero Sands Recreation Area - A great place to play in the sand
on foot or on an off-highway vehicle (OHV). With 610 acres of
30-60 foot drifting sand dunes, you can hike, picnic, nature
study, and play on your ATV or dune buggie year-round. There
are picnic shelters, tables, grills and restrooms. Day use /
camping fees are: $3 individual; $5 per vehicle; $5 overnight
camping; $15 busses with more than 15 passengers. 100% of all
fees are used for site maintenance and other improvements. Located
40 miles east of Roswell, NM on U.S. Highway 380.
- White Sands National Monument - Extensive fields of snow-white sand
dunes, created by gypsum salts, carried from an ancient evaporating
sea and piled up by prevailing winds. Hiking trails & visitor
center. Lots of events all year long. See "special events
schedule" below. Located just west of Alamogordo, NM
