Subject: Safety Training: Spring 2000 Schedule

The Safety Office provides training to help improve the working environment of NMSU employees as well as ensure compliance with regulations related to Safety and Environment Protection. The following describes the classes and recommended attendees and lists the classes scheduled for Spring 2000. Except for Defensive Driving (DDC) these classes are free and if there is interest or need, we can provide additional classes for small groups (6-12 persons).

To register or for more information call the Safety Office at 646-3327.

Class Description and Recommended Attendees

Bloodborne Pathogens training is provided to those individuals that have contact with blood, blood products, body fluids or other potential human infectious materials. Typically this includes custodians, plumbers, health care providers, EMTs, laboratory researcher working with these materials and Chemical Hygiene Officers.

Defensive Driving Class (DDC) is required to drive a University Vehicle. Registrants should be prepared to give their full name, address, social security number, date of birth, a current/valid driver's license number, and a department account number ($$). In addition to this National Safety Council sanctioned Defensive Driving Class, the motor vehicle records of prospective University drivers will be reviewed. Attendees must bring their current driver's license and a pencil to class.

Hazard Communication Standard (Hazard Comm. Std.) training is provided for those departments using hazardous materials. This includes industrial and laboratory chemicals as well as many common materials such as paints, glues, or cleaners, in quantities larger than might be kept in a desk or small office. If a department has a lab, darkroom, work area or storage with adhesives, cleaners, solvents, inks, fuels, pesticides, or other chemicals, then the individuals using the area need to keep an inventory, be trained and have access to safety information and equipment. This class covers the basic training on hazardous materials required to comply with OSHA and is recommended on an annual basis.

Laboratory Standard (Lab. Std.) training is provided for Chemical Hygiene Officers, lab managers, and individuals working in laboratories that meet OSHA laboratory definition. The class on the Hazard Communication Standard is a prerequisite. Radiation Safety training is provided for radiation permittees and users under the permittee=92s authority as well as Chemical Hygiene Officers. Respiratory Safety and Fit Testing is required annually for all employees using respirators (including dust masks). For your safety a medical evaluation information sheet must be completed at least two weeks prior to training.

Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) training is required by and provided for employees working or visiting on White Sand Missile Range.
