Subject: Ladder Safety

Two accidents on campus within the last 90 days involving portable ladders and the need for fall protection on raised platforms have prompted the NMSU Environmental Health & Safety Department to provide a refresher course on portable ladder safety.

The course will be offered prior to the beginning of the fall semester and will cover the applicable safety requirements for the purchase and use of portable step and extension ladders on campus. A local safety supply house will demonstrate current fall protection equipment and provide a review of guidelines / regulations for working on raised platforms, roofs, or other structures where fall protection may be required.

Dates for the training session will be announced. In the interim, supervisor and faculty with projects requiring the use of ladders must assess the potential hazards and take appropriate steps to safeguard workers and students against possible injury due to any inappropriate use of the equipment. If they are working on raised platforms, railings should be put in place for any structure over 6 feet in height. If railings are impractical, fall protection shall be worn by those on the platform.

If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Environmental Health & Safety Department (a.k.a. Safety Office) at 646-3327.
