MEMBERS PRESENT: Katrina Doolittle, Jose Flores, Linda Perez, Chris Pennise, Joseph Fedak, Jacki Griffin, Tom Reichardt, Dennis Fuller and Lou Cabot.

The regular Safety Committee Meeting was called to order at 3:35 P.M. by Katrina Doolittle, Chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were unanimously approved.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Safety Week

a) Katrina Doolittle stated that this year safety week turned into safety month with all the additional events and fire safety. The main campaign for safety week was training on the new emergency telephone system. DABCC and PSL are now included in the emergency telephone system.
b) Katrina asked members to propose new ideas for next years safety week. She stated that they are thinking of expanding into a different realm, possibly set-up safety booths inside the buildings verses the usual outside
set-up.
c) Katrina said that Administrative Counsel was supportive and asked for a follow-up briefing on safety week events.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Gardner Hall Incident

a) Chris Pennise briefed members regarding a recent incident in Gardner Hall. She stated that there was damage caused by water overflowing from a sink in GN204. Water leaked down to the floor below causing the plaster ceiling in GN104 to cave in. The old ceiling plaster contained asbestos, but was not a health problem while it was wet. Classes were canceled and an abatement was performed immediately. 

2. EH&S Performance Survey Results

a) Katrina stated that Ben Woods initiated a Performance Survey for all sections that report to him (Police, Parking, Safety, Personnel, Real Estate and OFS) and was distributed to a limited campus population in late spring. The EH&S Performance Survey Results were distributed to safety committee members one week prior to the September 24th meeting for review. Katrina proposed for members to voice their ideas/in-put on any section of the survey at the meeting.
b) Linda Perez stated that comments on the survey indicate that people do not know that information/training is available.
c) Committee discussed mechanisms to increase visibility of services offered by EH&S. These services included a newsletter and expanded training availability.

3. Safety Newsletter Creation

a) Katrina asked members for help in creating a newsletter to run twice a year or quarterly.
b) Jackie Griffin stated that she would contribute the workers compensation part to the newsletter.
c) Members were encouraged to submit topics or incidents of interest.

4. Training

a) Members discussed ways of distributing information and getting individuals interested in training. Linda stated that she purchased the book Training by Accidents that could be used for training. She stated that the book gives examples of what could happen in different incidents when individuals donít follow safety protocol.
b) Stated was that some training and testing could be done through Web Ct so that international student can be ready before they arrive at NMSU. Training that requires interaction with instructor would be taken when they arrive.
c) Lou Cabot stated that they have another CPR instructor.

5. Other

a) Linda Perez asked if there was a written policy on lighting candles. Katrina will ask Darrell Smith by e-mail.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:40 P.M. The next University Safety Committee Meeting is scheduled December17, 2003.
