ANNOUNCEMENT: Spring 2004 Safety Training Schedule &
Employee Obligations
The NMSU safety training schedule for spring 2004 session has been
posted on the web at
EH&S Safety website - http://www.nmsu.edu/~safety
EH&S will provide over 50 training classes this spring semester for
the University community. Except for Defensive Driving & CPR, the classes
are free. These classes are offered to improve safety in the University
workplaces and to help departments meet regulatory obligations (see requirements
below).
Training requirements
|
All new full time employees |
New employees should observe that many of the Employee & HazCom
Safety classes have been coordinated with the New Employee Benefit Orientations
sessions (same day). As noted on your employment letter, this class is
required for new full time employees. |
|
Full, temporary, part-time, student, graduate,
& post-doctoral employees working with hazardous chemicals. |
Department heads and supervisors should be aware that all
employees that work with hazardous materials are required, at a minimum,
to take the Employee & HazCom Safety class. This includes temporary,
part-time, post-doc, graduate, student and other employees in research,
teaching, shop, & agricultural settings.
As these employees and their supervisors may not be aware of above requirements,
EH&S asks that this information be forwarded to them or otherwise brought
to their attention.
|
|
Other employee (& dept.) obligations |
In addition to the above, many departmental
work areas require additional training (initial, annual or periodic) as
well as documents (e.g. chemical inventory, MSDSs, chemical hygiene plan,
infection control plan) to operate within the law. EH&S provides
the initial training and requires annual document updates. Checklists
of requirements are available on the EH&S website via the following
links:
research
& lab areas and general,
agr. & shop areas

EH&S provides the class and documentation to the supervisor. All
classes are given at the Safety training facility (please see map on website).
Class descriptions are given on the website (see above link).
Note: We expect to add several classes on Asbestos Awareness and CPR
later this spring. I will announce the dates and times when they
have been finalized.
Departments are requested to post the above for employee information.
