1) What, if any, technology fee is charged by the campus? What does it cover?

2) Will you be required to purchase your own computer?

3) Does the campus make computing and network access financially accessible? Is special student pricing offered for computers and peripheral equipment?

4) Does the campus assess extra fees for network connections in residence hall rooms or for off-campus access?

5) What hardware and software standards, if any, does the campus require, recommend, and/or support?

6) What kinds of services (help desk, training, troubleshooting) are provided by the campus, and when are they available?

1) What, if any, technology fee is charged by the campus? What does it cover?

NMSU charges a $20 technology per semester for each full time student. The technology fee covers Computer lab use, Laser printing quota, subsidized Computer rentals,
Email accounts, Personal web space, Wireless zones, and Modem access in local area. These fees will also help with the implementation of a student portal which will include personal calendars, group calendars, group communication areas, integrated email, and many other student centered channels. The portal is planned for launch in early 2005.

2) Will you be required to purchase your own computer?

No, NMSU students are not required to purchase their own computers; however, this is being considered by various majors as a future requirement. There are computer labs available to all students enrolled at NMSU. These have extended hours and the primary lab is open 24x7 during the major semesters. Students can rent desktop computers, laptops, projectors, and variety of other equipment that can help them with their school work. 3) Does the campus make computing and network access financially accessible? Is special student pricing offered for computers and peripheral equipment?

4) Does the campus assess extra fees for network connections in residence hall rooms or for off-campus access?

No, high speed internet and cable TV is included in the cost of the rooms.

5) What hardware and software standards, if any, does the campus require, recommend, and/or support?

NMSU recommends currently recommends Apple, Gateway, and Dell for institutional machines. NMSU provides special links to these vendors at https://www.nmsu.edu/online/buy.html .

6) What kinds of services (help desk, training, troubleshooting) are provided by the campus, and when are they available?

The NMSU Help Desk provides students the following services:

•  Assistance connecting via dial-up and high speed network connections.

•  Email troubleshooting.

•  ID and passwords assistance and resets.

•  Assistance with network security for students, including the removal of viruses, and assisting with windows security/critical updates.

7) Does the campus have a plan for keeping its hardware and software current, and if so, what is the replacement cycle?

NMSU replaces student computers which are three years old. The funding for upgrades varies somewhat year to year, depending on the university's budget. Currently the majority of student computing is less than two years old due to increased funding from the student technology fee.

8) If you bring your own computer to school, what kind of technical support can you expect from the campus?

NMSU provides students assistance with connecting their personal computers to the campus network, checking for current anti-virus software, checking for current OS security patches, and provide assistance for software installs. Student technology fees have funded McAfee anti-virus software that student can install on their personal machines.

9) How does the campus support printing for students, and is there a charge for this service?

The NMSU computer labs have one or more laser printer for student use. The cost of printing is 3 cents per page for black in, but this charge is currently administered with an honor system. Color printing is available for fifty cents per page through a proctored system. A pay-for-print system will be implemented in 2005, with student technology fees paying for the initial printout quota the students will receive.

10) Does the campus provide wireless network coverage? If so, how much of the campus has wireless connectivity?

Yes, the NMSU provides wireless network areas almost everywhere in campus, to help the students study in the areas where they feel more relaxed and able to study. These areas are located in the Student Union, Library, study areas, Student housing Lobbies, common areas, and most colleges.
