How to Use this Manual

A number of health careers are related in their scope and duties. For this reason, the career information in A Lifetime of Opportunity: Careers in Health is arranged according to fields of study. This system allows individuals who have a specific interest or ability - for example, in laboratory sciences, counseling, or vision care - to turn to one section of this manual to learn about a variety of career opportunities that are related to individual skills and aptitudes in that field of study.

For each career listing, information is provided on general work activities, work settings, educational or special requirements, and training programs that are offered in New Mexico. A chart of Educational Requirements for each career in this manual appe ars on pages 94 and 95. Students who want to know which educational programs are offered by a specific college, hospital, or proprietary or vocational school should consult the Educational Institutions section on pages 90-93. Provided is a listing of health-related programs offered by the institutions, including each facility's phone number and address.

Additional information about careers can be obtained by contacting the organizations that are listed in the Sources of More Information section on pages 96 and 97. These organizations represent a variety of agencies and disciplines and may have additiona l career-related information.

Because tuition and school expenses often are factors in a student's ability to enroll in college or a professional program, the Southern Area Health Education Center (SoAHEC) researches financial assistance opportunities for health-related education. The Financial Aid section on pages 98-104 provides information on general and health-related assistance programs.

Another feature in this manual is the Job Bank on pages 107 and 108. Recent graduates and/or those already trained in a health career may find useful tips in this section when ready to seek health-related employment.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and comprehensiveness of this resource. However, as this is the First Edition of a Lifetime of Opportunity: Careers in Health, it is recognized that errors may occur. Please be assured that we will make all corrections that come to our attention in future editions.

The Table of Contents, career sections, and Educational Requirements chart present career information in alphabetical order, by field of study. (An alphabetical listing of career titles is provided in the Index.)
