Welcome to New Mexico State University and the School of Social Work. The School of Social Work offers both the undergraduate BSW degree and the graduate MSW degree. Both the BSW and MSW degree programs can be taken on a part time basis. In addition, BSW graduates who meet specific admission requirements can be considered for the Advanced Standing program. This program allows students to complete the MSW degree in one academic year.
The BSW degree prepares students for a beginning professional level of generalist social work practice with an understanding and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Southwest. Graduates of the program find employment in a diverse range of settings that include child welfare, corrections, services to the elderly, and health care. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has accredited the BSW program since 1975.
The MSW degree provides students with a concentration in family centered social work in multi-cultural settings. This unique focus serves to equip students with the appropriate professional knowledge, values and skills necessary to assess and understand client systems from a family perspective and to deliver services at all levels of intervention that will serve to build and strengthen family functioning. These advanced skills and knowledge incorporate cultural responsiveness to the needs of diverse families (as defined by the client system), and addresses families in the context of social, cultural, community, and other environmental systems. The MSW program has been accredited by CSWE since 1991.
The faculty and staff of the School are proud of its programs, its students, and its alumni who have made and continue to make significant contributions to the profession of social work within the state, region, nation, and internationally. The faculty represents a diversity of backgrounds and professional experience that includes child welfare, mental health, health care, gerontology, family services, school social work, and corrections.
The School is part of the College of Health and Social Services that include the departments of nursing and health science. New Mexico State University is the state’s land-grant institution that was founded in 1888. NMSU has a total enrollment of 14, 958 students that represent all 50 states and 77 foreign countries. Further, NMSU is included in Hispanic Magazine’s Top 25 list and ranked by The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education as 19th in bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics.
New Mexico State University is located within sunny and warm Las Cruces, New Mexico. The campus is set against the backdrop of the rugged and picturesque Organ Mountains.
