Preparing The Next Generation of Professionals The NMSU School of Social Work
Welcome to the homepage of the School of Social Work at New Mexico State University. The School is always in the process of growth and change. Some of the most notable events include:
- Albuquerque program will offer all MSW programs on both a full time and part time basis beginning in the Fall 2008. This includes both the regular and Advanced Standing MSW programs.
- Albuquerque now has 92 MSW students with a full time support staff, three full time faculty, and one professional staff person.
- Albuquerque will add another full time faculty position in Fall 2008.
- An MSW/MPH Joint Degree Program has been initiated. This program will lead to a student graduating with an MSW degree and an MPH in Community Health Education degree.
- In Fall 2007 the School had 215 MSW students, 115 BSW students and 16 full time faculty.
- Searches are now underway for two new faculty positions to begin in Fall 2008. This will bring the School to 18 full time faculty.
- A Ph.D. in Social Work proposal will be approved and submitted for NMSU and HED approval in Spring 2008. Implementation is anticipated for the 2010-2011 academic year.
The School of Social Work offers both the the BSW degree and the MSW degree that are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. In cooperation with the Department of Health Science we have added a new joint degree program leading to both the MSW and MPH degrees. The MPH is in the area of community health education. The MPH part of the program can be done both as an online degree program or by attending classes on the Las Cruces campus.
The MSW program is now offered at both the NMSU main campus in Las Cruces and at the NMSU Center in Albuquerque. Beginning in the fall of 2008, the MSW program will be offered on both a full time and part time basis in Albuquerque. The MSW program includes both the full time two year program and the Advanced Standing program. Advanced Standing is offered only to BSW graduates who meet specific admission requirements. This program allows students to complete the MSW degree in a short summer session and two full semesters on a full time basis. Both the regular and Advanced Standing MSW programs are also offered on a part time basis in both Las Cruces and Albuquerque.
The faculty and staff of the School are proud of its programs, its students, and its alumni who have made and continue to make significant contributions to the profession of social work within the state, region, nation, and internationally. The School is home to the Family Preservation Institute and the Family and Child Welfare Training and Research Project. Both serve to develop, disseminate and provide training on "best practices" in serving the needs of children, youth and families. The latter project represents the strong partnership that the School has with the Children's, Youth and Family Department (CYFD) of the State of New Mexico. This project through Title IV-E provides opportunities for students to receive financial support in exchange for a commitment to work for CYFD upon graduation. The faculty represents a diversity of backgrounds and professional experience that includes child welfare, mental health, health care, gerontology, family services, school social work, and corrections. Current research efforts of the faculty include domestic violence, cultural factors impacting HIV/AIDS, and substance abuse.
We invite you to explore and consider our program for your educational needs. Again, welcome and if there is anything we can do to assist you in answering your questions or in making your decision please feel free to contact us.
