Student Services in the School of Social Work
Academic Advising is best done in person. Students are only admitted to the major in a Fall semester. If you self-advise, you could miss this "fall window" and have to wait one year.
Academic advising for the Bachelor of Social Work is divided into two phases. The first is for students taking the pre-requisite courses that are necessary before the student can enter the Social Work major itself. These students are designated Pre-Social Work Majors (PSWK)
Admission to the major requires a formal application which is submitted in the January prior to beginning the social work program. A 2.5 Cum GPA, at least 60 degree countable credits and all prerequisite courses are required before starting in the major. Some courses must carry a grade of C or higher. The application packets are available in November of each year. No SWK courses may be taken (except SWK 221G) prior to being formally admitted to the major.
Once a student is admitted to the major, they are then called Social Work majors (SWK).
The Coordinator of Student Services in the School of Social Work advises both the pre-majors and the majors.
Once admitted to the major, the program of study is in a blocked format and may not be moved around. Each semester of courses serves as prerequisites for the succeeding semester of courses.
Transfer students should contact the pre-Social Work advisor (646-3529) as early as possible to determine which of their credits will transfer to NMSU and which will count toward this degree. An unofficial transcript may be faxed to: 505-646-4116 for the purpose of this preliminary/unofficial evaluation. No course credit is given for work or life experience.
Students who have been admitted to or are currently in the Masters of Social Work programs are assigned faculty advisors. If you are unsure of the name of your faculty advisor or need a reminder, please contact Debra Henrie in the School of Social Work, HSS 210.
If you are a student either interested or enrolled in the School of Social Work and you are in need of course advising, please contact Maria Ortiz-Cordero, School of Social Work Student Services Coordinator. Telephone: 505-646-3529, Room 210B, HSS
