In 2004, the Board of Regents approved the Student Technology Fee. The funds provided by this fee helped to support the ongoing and growing demand for a robost technology infrastructure. It made a variety of technology services for New Mexico State University (NMSU) affordable. The Student Technology Fee became part of the University fees and tuition at the Las Cruces campus during the 2005 fiscal year. Initally, the Student Technology Fee was set at $20 per semester. By fiscal year 2010, the fee had increased to $67. In the first year of the Student Technology Fee, a total of $516,000 was dedicated to accelerating the improvements and implementation of student computer lab operations, multi-media enhanced classrooms and computer classrooms, help desk customer service assistance, dial-up modem services, online course management system, software licenses, wireless zones, and core networking systems. It was at that time a student committee was formed under the direction of the University's Chief Information Officer to provide advice on how funds provided by the fee would be allocated to technology projects for NMSU students. This committee is known as the Student Technology Advisory Committee (STAC). STAC, which represents the student body, works to ensure students' voices are heard for all issues related to technology at NMSU. The focus of this group is to help drive initiatives in technology across campus, primarily through the main campus Student Technology Fee. The students on the committe help identify and recommend new technology projects, and assist in the decision-making process as it pertains to information technology at NMSU. NMSU's Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) department relies on STAC to recommend actions on new and existing technology services.
