Scholarship
Opportunities
There are several scholarship opportunities available for Surveying Engineering students. Not all possible scholarships are listed here. Other opportunities can be found under the Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP), and at the Financial Aid office. The scholarships listed here include all of the ones we know about that are specifically targeted for Surveying students.
Most of the scholarships
require a GPA of at least 2.5, some require a higher GPA. It has been my observation that not many students
apply for scholarships, so if you do apply, your chances are probably pretty
good. While GPAs are important,
reviewers look at other factors, such as financial need, contributions to society,
letters of reference, etc.
Don’t be discouraged if you
do not receive a scholarship on your first try. It is a good idea to reapply for scholarships that you did not
receive as the reviewers will probably remember you from the year before. I am told that this can be a positive factor
in deciding who gets scholarships.
College of
Engineering Scholarships
First, there are several scholarships available through the NMSU College of Engineering. You only need turn in ONE College of Engineering Scholarship Application form to be considered for ALL of the following scholarships:
The Tom Mann Scholarship ($750)
The New Mexico Professional Surveyors Scholarship (2 @ $500 each)
The BLM Cadastral Surveying Scholarship ($400)
The Surveying Ethics Scholarship ($400)
You should be able to find
scholarship application forms either in the Survey Student lounge or online
at the link listed below. Turn the scholarship application form in to RoseMarie
Melon or Olga Legarreta on the third floor of Goddard Hall.
New Mexico Professional
Surveyors (NMPS) Educational Foundation Scholarships
The NMPS Educational Foundations
was set up specifically to provide scholarships and other financial support
for Surveying Education in New Mexico. Although
you do not need to be a NMSU Surveying Engineering student to apply, it certainly
doesn't hurt. The Foundation normally
gives out scholarships for $500 and $1,000 once or twice a year, as funding
permits.
The Western Federation of
Land Surveyors (WestFed)
WestFed is an alliance of professional
surveying societies from the 12 western states, including New Mexico. Qualifying students are normally from a
western state or are taking Surveying courses at a western university. Scholarships are for $700 and $1,200.
The American Congress on
Surveying and Mapping (ACSM)
ACSM has 10 scholarships reserved
for Surveying students across the U.S. You can submit ONE scholarship application, but will need to check
off all of the scholarships for which you are applying. Please only apply for scholarships for which
you are eligible as the scholarship review committee has told me that they
look at that as one of the positive
factors in deciding who gets the scholarships.
