On-line and/or Video Education for Land Surveyors

Summary - Surveying Ethics Course

New Mexico State University

December 2004

The Survey Ethics course at New Mexico State University will not longer be taught as a one semester credit course beginning in January 2005.  While the course content and structure will not change – it will continue to have study materials, homework problems and a final exam – students will no longer need to enroll in NMSU to take the course.  This means a reduction in red tape to get into the course.  It also means that students can sign up for the course at any time and do not need to worry about the university semester timetable.

The course, previously SUR 402 – Ethics and Professionalism in Surveying, has been taught continuously at NMSU since January 1999.   The course was developed under an agreement with NCEES as a means to give a surveying-specific focus to ethics education.  Materials from the course are used in the classroom at NMSU and were made available via distance education as continuing education for practicing surveyors.  The materials have also been provided to other US Surveying programs and are being used at several other campuses besides NMSU.  The course materials cover the reasons for professional ethics, the basic principles of professional ethics, and advice on solving ethical dilemmas that surveyors might typically face.  The course normally takes about three months to complete, but we have had students finish in as little as ten days and ask for and receive extensions of up to a year.

The course consists of two ethics manuals, one on background material and another on case studies.  The course can be taken over the Internet or by videotape.  We will soon explore making it available by DVD.  The course consists of several homework problems involving practical solutions to surveying-specific ethical situations.  A sample situation and sample solution are provided for guidance.  Students taking the Internet version have all the need materials available online.  Students taking the videotape version will have tapes (15 hours), manuals, and homework problems shipped to them.  We will need a street address to deliver the videotapes as they are shipped via UPS.  The cost for the Internet version is $179 and the cost of the videotape version is $259.  There is no longer an application fee for the course.
