This report summarizes the evaluation of piezoelectric AWACS sensors at four flexible pavement sites in Arkansas. The project's objective was to continue evaluation, which originated with the DEMO 76 test performed in Minnesota, of piezoelectric cable in asphaltic concrete cement pavement for WIM applications with emphasis on the relative stiffness of the pavement structures. The four sites were to include one with an asphalt overlay of a concrete pavement, a normal stiffness pavement, a relatively stiff pavement, and a poor quality pavement to give a wide range of conditions for evaluation. The sites
were selected and then evaluated using the site selection techniques described
in the Iowa and Minnesota DEMO 76 Project report. Potential sites were
tested with a falling weight deflectometer (FWD) to determine their rigidity.
Visual inspections were made to determine grade, horizontal alignment,
general roughness, and rutting. A ride meter was used to determine the
roughness of the highway section including the piezoelectric axle sensors.
After the site inspection was completed the factors were all tabulated
and weighted using techniques from the Iowa-Minnesota report. A value
range from 0 to 55 was used to assess the desirability of each site for
piezoelectric axle sensors. The report illustrates the results of the
site selection, including the ride meter and FWD measurements. key words:
