The Alumni Association kept busy this spring with Honors Nights all over New Mexico and alumni activities out of state. It is too bad I can't get frequent driver miles. The Honors Nights give me the opportunity to drive between 8,500 and 10,000 miles in eight weeks.

The driving and being away from home is all worth it: 6,700 students and their families joined us for the awards. Nearly 3,000 - the best and brightest students in New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, received awards for their academic achievements.

Denton, Texas - Feb. 20, 1999

Seventy-five Aggies in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area had a pre-game barbecue before the New Mexico State/North Texas basketball game in Denton. We had a great time at the home of Gus, '57, '58, and Karen Seligman.

Big West Conference Basketball Tournament - March 5-7, 1999

In case you haven't heard: the Aggie basketball team won the conference tournament in Reno, Nev. The Alumni Association, Aggie Scholarship Association and colleges of business, agriculture and engineering co-sponsored a reception before each game.

NCAA First Round - New Orleans, La.

The same group co-sponsored a pre-game reception for the game between the Aggies and Kentucky. Our team played well and we gained respect from a lot of folks. My thanks to Joe Creed, '59, '86, for being the reception host.

Colorado Chapter - July 31, 1999

A picnic at Monument Valley Park, Colorado Springs, Colo., is being planned. Julie Hall, '83, is helping coordinate this event. Information will be mailed to Colorado Alumni in July.

Northern California - Aug. 7, 1999

Edith, '47, and Herb, '50, Edde are planning winery visits in Gilroy and a barbecue at their home. Information will be mailed in early July.

Football/Pre-game Tailgates

Events will be planned around the following games: Sept. 10 - Albuquerque pre-game kick-off party, Ramada Mountain View; Sept. 11 - Aggie/Lobo game. Marty Finley, '93, and Frank Paul, '95, are helping to coordinate; Sept. 18 - ASU tailgate party, Tempe, Ariz.

Washington, D.C., Chapter

Sept. 25 - Plans are underway for the 3Bs party in Virginia. Brad Cates, '72, has again offered his home for our Aggie Alumni Beans, Burritos and Beer Party. Kent McIntosh, '41, is coordinating the event and would love to have help. He can be reached at (505) 646-3616.

Homecoming - Oct. 7- 9, 1999

Plans are underway for Homecoming 1999, which will feature the 50th and 40th class reunions and a performance by the comedian Gallagher.

Pistol Pete Cookie Cutters

The Alumni Association has custom-made Pistol Pete cookie cutters available for purchase. They are copper and look exactly like the Pete you remember, including the fringe on the chaps. I would like to include a cookie recipe with each cutter ordered. If you are willing to share your favorite sugar cookie recipe, please send it to the Alumni Office.

To place an order, send a check for $15 for each cutter to the NMSU Alumni Association with your return address. For an additional $3 each, the cookie cutters can be turned into business card holders.

License Plates

The Alumni Association also plans to offer another Pistol Pete item: regulation New Mexico license plates featuring Pete. These will be your actual state license plates. They will cost an additional $35 registration fee. Please contact me at the Alumni Office for more information.

Thanks to John Chavez, '84, New Mexico secretary of transportation, for his help with this program.

Aggies of the Pacific War

Walter Hines, '66, '67, has written a book about Aggies who fought in the Pacific during World War II. Aggies of the Pacific War: New Mexico A&M and the War with Japan will debut during Homecoming, Oct. 7-9.

The book will retail for $35 but is available to alumni through Oct. 1 for $25. A portion of all sales will go to the NMSU Alumni Scholarship Fund. To place an order, mail payment to the Alumni Office. Indicate whether you will be at Homecoming to pickup your order or if you would like your copies mailed. Add $3 for shipping and handling for copies to be mailed. Visa, MasterCard, American Express and checks, made payable to Yucca Tree Press, are accepted.

Three inducted into Hall of Fame

NMSU's College of Business Administration and Economics honored its 1999 Hall of Fame inductees in April.

Raymond L. Kysar, '53, of Farmington, N.M., is the founder and chief executive officer of the Kysar Insurance Agency in Farmington and owner of the Diamond K Bar Ranch in Cedar Hill. He has served as state senator from District 1 in San Juan County since 1988. He served on the business college's Business Advisory Council from 1980 to 1994 and received the college's Distinguished Alumni award in 1981.

Michael J. Maloof, '55, of Albuquerque, is a director and the executive vice president of Maloof Companies in Albuquerque and serves on the board of directors of First Security Bank. He received a Distinguished Alumni award in 1975 from the business college and serves on the college's Business Advisory Council.

Great Idea, Nevada Chapter

Now here's a pleasant problem: What should an alumni chapter do with more money than it needs? Last fall, Walter Hines ,'66, '67, and Joe Downs, '55, decided that excess money in the coffer for the Las Vegas Aggie Alumni Chapter should go to an NMSU student from Nevada. Pictured with Hines is Kelly Madrid, the student selected to receive a $417 scholarship. Madrid, of Boulder City, Nev., is majoring in chemical engineering. An avid horsewoman, she is a member of NMSU's equestrian team.
