  • Edwin "Ed" Mechem, '36, recently celebrated 25 years on the federal bench as a U.S. district judge in Albuquerque. Mechem is a former governor of New Mexico and a former U.S. senator. Mechem, 83, took senior status in 1982 when he turned 70. Although he could have retired, he maintains an active caseload of about 200 civil cases and comes to the office on Saturdays. In November 1995, his longtime secretary, Charlotte Bates, arranged a surprise luncheon to celebrate the judge's quarter-century on the bench. It drew ex-clerks and judges from as far as New York. "I couldn't have done it without you," Mechem told the crowd.

  • J. Henry Gustafson, '40, was recently elected city councilor for District 2 in Las Cruces. Shelby Armstrong, '41, and Lucile White Armstrong, '42, spend summers at their home at the Hidden Valley golf course in Aztec, N.M., and winters near the Mount Graham Golf Course in Safford, Ariz., since their retirement. Shelby owned Aztec Hardware Company prior to retirement, and Lucile taught or served as elementary school librarian for 30 years until her retirement in 1983.

    James "Jim" Craig Ogden, '42, and his wife, Mary "Sue" Forehand Ogden, are recipients of the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award. James and Sue have been active in national, state and local farm and ranch organizations. They have supported youth activities such as 4-H and FFA in Eddy County and Carlsbad, N.M.

    Bernice Willis, '46, and Hank Willis, '47, of Albuquerque celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at NMSU Homecoming '95.

  • Keith Avery, '55, is a cowboy, poet and painter. His latest publication is Trails of a Wanderer, published by Guy Logsdon Books. Campfire Echoes, the Art and Poetry of Keith W. Avery, was published last year and proceeds from its sales have gone to NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics. Wayne Usrey, '59, owns Studio W, an El Paso art gallery that specializes in Western representational art.

    Betty Sims Solt, '59, is secretary-treasurer of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA). She is enrolling NIRA alumni to get ready for the 1996 reunion in Bozeman, Mont. Champions from 1986, 1976, 1956 and 1951, as well as all pre-NIRA contestants, will be honored June 14-15 during the College National Finals Rodeo.

    Alex Sanchez, '56, is Albuquerque Technical Vocation Institute's third president. He served as director of Dona Ana County Occupational Education Branch of NMSU, then moved to the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell where he was academic dean from 1977-1979. From 1979-1989, Sanchez worked at the University of New Mexico.

  • Dr. William Deering, '60, was promoted to professor of physics at the University of North Texas in Denton.

    Charles L. Klaudt, '60, was appointed to the Washington State Independent Living Advisory Council by Gov. Mike Lowry for a three-year term. The purpose of the council is to give advice on laws and regulations that affect persons with disabilities.

    J.B. Pruett, '62, was appointed last summer by state Gov. Gary Johnson to serve on the state Construction Industries Commission and is the only representative for southern New Mexico. Pruett is president and owner of Wooten Construction in Las Cruces.

    Charles Anthony Sayre, '62, the longest-serving district highway engineer in New Mexico, has ended his 18-year career as district highway engineer. He brought about many changes in southern New Mexico's highway system, including overseeing the completion of the interstate highway system and a paved a road to the Alamo Navajo reservation near Magdalena, N.M.

    Dr. Dev Chopra, '64, has been honored as one of the first Regents Professors at East Texas State University in Commerce. He is a faculty member in the university's department of physics.

    Ruben A. Smith, '65, has been re-elected as mayor of Las Cruces. He has served as full-time mayor since 1991.

    Richard Llanez, '66, and his wife, Mary Helen, run the Ric-Llan Farm Inc., south of Anthony, N.M. This year they are farming 280 acres with alfalfa, cotton, (Pima and Upland) and chile. The LlanezÔs also raise garden varieties for customers and restaurants. Thomas Gallegos, '68, has been appointed chief professional officer for the engineering category of the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps by acting Surgeon General Audrey F. Manley.

  • Delbert C. Dyche, '70, has been named the new director of the local senior citizens' program in Los Alamos, N.M. He is personnel director for Los Alamos Public Schools.

    Jeanette G. Hall, '70, was promoted to LTC in the Arizona Army National Guard as the Chief, Office of Substance Abuse in the State Area Command Headquarters. She lives in Tempe, Ariz., and works as the human resources officer for the Arizona Health Care Containment System.

    William Mike Griffin, '70, has been named general manager of John Deere Company's new Las Cruces operation. Griffin was former plant manager of Baltimore Spice in Anthony, Texas.

    Teofilo Holguin, '71, has been selected to fill a new administrative position, created at White Sands Missile Range, for the management of base operations.

    Gayland Bryant, '71, has been selected as the new public information officer for Sandoval County, N.M. Bryant began his career in 1971 as a journalist with United Press International, where he held several positions including Midwest regional executive, southwest regional executive and New Mexico bureau manager. Jose Frietze, '72, was recently elected to the Las Cruces City Council. He is chief executive officer for Families and Youth Inc. and has served 10 years on the Las Cruces School Board.

    Frank DuBois, '73, New Mexico agriculture secretary, was selected Cattleman of the Year by the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association.

    Gordon Mike McDow, '73, '75, is chief of the business and industry program of the rural Economic and Community Development Service in Albuquerque.

    Joyce Lankford Allman, '73, '89, has received a doctorate in communications with an emphasis in interpersonal communications from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Allman's specialization is physician-patient communication.

    Rudy Franco, '73, was appointed warden of La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution in July 1995.

    Joe Remondini, '74, was selected Floodplain Manager of the Year at the Oklahoma Floodplain Management Association Annual Conference at Lake Texoma. Remondini is assigned as coordinator of Floodplain management services for the Tulsa district office.

    William F. Corcoran, '75, was guest speaker for a Veteran's Day observance at Ashley Pond and the Los Alamos County, N.M., Municipal Building. He is retired from a 22-year career with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Corcoran serves as an affiliate with the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics and works as a novice cook with the American Legion Mess Hall Restaurant.

    Juan Franco, '76, was the main speaker for the 1995 NMSU Chicano Programs annual Hispanic Heritage Luncheon. Franco became associate vice president for academic affairs at NMSU in 1990.

    Philip G. Jones, '76, has been promoted to mechanical technician at Chino Mines in Silver City, N.M.

    Claude J. Law, '76, former acting director of the community college division at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, was named director. Law has been associated with the university since 1981. He recently was awarded a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Arizona in Tucson.

    Navy Cmdr. John K. Larsh, '76, received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal while serving with the Office of Military Cooperation in Kuwait. Larsh is an air operations officer at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. Edward Lujan, '77, was named one of Albuquerque's 10 most influential people by the New Mexico Business Journal. Lujan is an insurance executive who has been active in Republican politics. He once headed the state Republican Party.

    Cristino Y. Armienta, '77, is a Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class who has recently reported as a crew member aboard the fast combat support ship USS Rainier home ported in Bremerton, Wash.

    Bob Tachau, '77, '84, was appointed manager of engineering projects and explosives applications at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque. He was a systems analyst from 1993 until his promotion.

    Henry Estrada, '78, is bandmaster for the Los Lunas (N.M.) Tiger band. His 100-piece band was selected to march in the Hollywood Christmas parade on Dec. 3, 1995. Before going to Los Lunas, Estrada worked with the Alamogordo, N.M., schools for four years and two years as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico. Larry A. Goldstone, '78, in June 1993 started a Real Estate Investment Trust with six people. Today, the Santa Fe-based Thornburg Mortgage Asset Corporation, of which Goldstone is president, has total assets of $1.8 billion.

    Kathy M. Quitberg, '78, has been accepted into the professional veterinary medical program at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Roger D. Sears, '78, received a promotion to supervisory agent at the U.S. Border Patrol's Alamogordo, N.M., station. Prior to his entrance to the Border Patrol in 1981, he taught at Alamogordo High School and at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Ga. In 1991, Roger served a one-year term as president of the 12th Judicial District Law Enforcement Association. Imelda Garcia-Cesares, '79, has joined the NMSU Cooperative Extension Service as a home economist in Santa Fe County.

    Kermit "Ken" Schauer, '79, '83, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union in Las Cruces. Schauer has served on the board for the past six years. Schauer is assigned to the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary in New Mexico and holds the rank of colonel.

    Selma Sierra, '79, has been named Congressman Joe Skeen's (R-N.M.) press secretary in Washington, D.C. Sierra previously served as deputy press secretary for the House Ways and Means Committee; deputy assistant secretary for Human Resources Management at the Department of Interior; as deputy chief of staff for public affairs in former Gov. Garrey Carruthers' administration; and as a principal assistant to Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan.

  • John A. Ortega, '80, an agency manager for Farm Bureau Financial Services in Las Vegas, N.M., received Field Manager of the Year, the highest honor of Western Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company. Ortega also has received the Manager's Award and the Goal Buster Award. Under his leadership, the Sun Country Agency was named Agency of the Year.

    Lorentino Lalio, '80, has been appointed by New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson to be the New Mexico Department of Tourism's new Indian tourism director. He has been the director of Zuni Pueblo's Commerce and Taxation Department since 1994.

    Deborah Norland, '80, was approved for tenure at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She has been assistant professor of education at the college since 1990.

    Clarence L. Chavez, '80, was selected Martial Arts Karate Instructor of the Year and Male Instructor of the Year in 1995 by the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio. Katherine Armijo-Etre, '80, recently became the director of the Prevention and Intervention Division of the Children, Youth and Families Department in Albuquerque. She will balance the conflicting need of keeping families together while ensuring proper care if the state has to move in to stop abusive situations.

    Craig Ogden, '81, has been elected to the board of directors of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau. Ogden is a farmer in Eddy County who currently serves on the New Mexico Cotton Advisory Board and is president of the Eddy County 1517 Association.

    Kerry L. Davis, '82, is manager of Bohannan-Huston Inc., a Las Cruces full-service civil engineering consulting firm. Davis has been with the firm for 12 years and has been a principal of Bohannan-Huston Inc. since 1990.

    Steve Duran, '83, is the new finance director for Deming (N.M.) Public Schools. He has been an administrative assistant with the City of Deming since 1987. Duran also has worked for the accounting firm of Morrow Inc.

    Troy W. Prichard, '83, has opened law offices in Albuquerque. His practice concentrates on business law, real estate, divorce, accidents and criminal defense.

    Robert Culp, '83, was named 1994 State Conservation Officer of the Year by Shikar-Safari International, a hunting and conservation organization. Culp is a wildlife officer at the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish in Farmington.

    D'Auna Wood, '83, has been appointed commissioner of the New Mexico State Fair. She serves as secretary-treasurer. Wood is a licensed contractor and is active in many civic groups including the Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society.

    James Amend, '83, was appointed director of facilities engineering and operations at University Hospital in Albuquerque. He was formerly a senior engineer at Scientech Inc. and Belfort Engineering & Environmental Services.

    Navy Lt. Cmdr. Robert P. Nugent, '84, has returned to Norfolk, Va., after completing a six-month overseas deployment near Bosnia-Herzegovina with the Commander of Amphibious Squadron. Nugent joined the U.S. Navy in 1985.

    Rick C. Holguin, '84, has joined Dona Ana Branch Community College as a manufacturing engineer for the Small Business Development Center. He will provide technical assistance to all small manufacturing concerns in the southern region of the state.

    Alan Briley, '85, was elected president of the New Mexico Municipal Public Works Association. He is assistant manager of the Village of Ruidoso.

    Harry B. Montoya, '85, left his post as the executive director for LA CASA in Los Alamos County, N.M., to start with the Rio Grande Valley Coalition. Dr. Mary Elizabeth O'Dowd, '86, was named assistant professor in the Center for International Programs at St. Michael's College in Vermont.

    Sergio Castanon, '85, has been named principal of Ruidoso (N.M.) Middle School. He had previously been a teacher at Ruidoso High School for more than 11 years and was superintendent of the Hondo, N.M., public schools. Gabriel Campos, '86 received a doctorate of law degree from the University of Wisconsin in May 1995. Before returning to school to earn his law degree, Campos worked as an engineer for General Motors Corporation and Westinghouse.

    Todd Duke, '85, has been hired by Lea County, N.M., commissioners as facilities manager to oversee the county fairgrounds and cultural center.

    Richard Monks, '86, is opening an International House of Pancakes (IHOP) Restaurant on the corner of Telshor Street and U.S. Highway 70 in Las Cruces. John C. Galassini, '86, has been named manager of hydrometalurgical operations for Burro Chief Copper Company at Phelps Dodge Chino Mines Company in Silver City, N.M.

    Laurie West Abrams, '87, completed all three events in less than 11 hours at the Ironman Canada Triathlon. She won her age division and finished 12th among women in just her second ironman event. More than 1,500 athletes competed.

    Wallace "Wally" H. Ferguson, '87, was named Man of the Year by New Mexico CowBelles. Ferguson is director of New Mexico Cattle Growers and is a member of the New Mexico Beef Council, National Cattlemen's Association and the New Mexico Farm Bureau.

    Raul Dorn, '87, teaches painting and drawing at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces. His work was exhibited at Adobe Patio Gallery in Mesilla, N.M.

    Andrew Drexler, '87, was awarded a certificate of distinguished performance for achievement on the Certified Management Accountant Examination. Drexler is a senior accountant in financial planning for Honeywell Industrial Automation and Control in Phoenix.

    Juanita Sanchez Sage, '88, was a 1995 candidate for Las Cruces mayor. Sage is a Las Cruces businesswoman who acted as a liaison for business and cultural affairs between Mexico and New Mexico under former Gov. Casey Luna. She has been appointed to the Business Advisory Council by Gov. Gary Johnson.

    Pablo J. Gutierrez, '88, has been presented the Crystal Tital Award and a certificate of recognition for superior performance in the Solid Rocket Motor Upgrade Pathfinder by U.S. Air Force Space Command, 5th Space Launch Squadron at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.

    Nancy Flores, '88, has been hired by the NMSU Cooperative Extension Service as a food technology specialist in Alcalde, N.M. She was formerly a quality assurance supervisor at the Louis Rich Turkey Division of Kraft Foods.

    Julie Aicher, '89, is city editor for Albuquerque Journal's northern edition in Santa Fe. She will help coordinate the newspaper's daily coverage of northern New Mexico news, business news, sports and features.

    Dr. William M. Andrews, '91, director of planning, research and development of the Saddleback Community College District in Mission Viejo, Calif., has been selected to serve as the interim vice president for instruction. Prior to accepting his current position in 1990, he served as the director of institutional research and director of learning resources at El Paso Community College.

    Gabriel James Villegas, '91, was admitted to the College of Law at Arizona State University in Tempe with a full-tuition scholarship.

    Tom Herbert, '91, owns Image Photography in Deming, N.M. The company, founded more than three years ago, offers high-tech photo restoration. Herbert was formerly with the Deming police force.

    Chuck D'Antonio, '92, is a sales engineer at Industrial Power Systems in Carlsbad, N.M. D'Antonio is a registered engineering intern for New Mexico and is a member of the institute of electrical and electronics engineers.

    Edward Romero, '92, has been appointed the multi-line agent of Western Farm Bureau Mutual and Life Insurance Co. in San Miguel County, N.M. Romero was previously a program coordinator for NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics and an insurance agent with Farm Bureau in Farmington, N.M.

    Mark K. Fischer, '92, recently joined Merrill Lynch to fill a newly created position as estate planning and insurance specialist for the El Paso region. Only one other person in the nation has the same position.

    Jamey Simpson, '92, is business editor of the Las Cruces Sun-News. She was previously a copy editor and a features and agriculture reporter for this newspaper. Simpson also was a reporter for the Alamogordo (N.M.) Daily News and the Hemet (Calif.) News.

    Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael E. Eatough, '92, has recently returned to the Adriatic Sea near Bosnia after being in the Persian Gulf near Iraq as part of a six-month overseas deployment aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Monterey. Eatough joined the U.S. Navy in 1994.

    Lisa M. Frost, '92, is attending the University of New Mexico School of Law in Albuquerque.

    Dr. Jerry A. McDowell, '92, wrote a dissertation on gifted education that was ranked in the top five in the United States by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He works at the University of Texas at El Paso.

    Mark D. Smith, '93, is a loan officer with First Security Bank in Santa Fe.

    Shawn P. Bryant, '93, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Mary Lou Moore, '93, is a nurse at Lincoln County Medical Center in Ruidoso, N.M.

    Tracey R. Goetsch, '93, earned a bronze medal as a back-up goalkeeper for the West Team Handball Squad in the U.S. Olympic Festival. She teaches fifth-grade at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Rio Rancho, N.M.

    Paul Gutierrez, '93, joined the Albuquerque Production Credit Association as assistant vice-president of credit. He spent the past two years working as director of government affairs for the New Mexico Farm Bureau. Gutierrez serves on the New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission.

    Carlos Carter, '93, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant through the U.S. Air Force ROTC program.

    Earl Andrew Yearley, '93, graduated from the New Mexico Police Academy and is employed with the Gallup, N.M., Police Department.

    Douglas B. Payne, '94, is a student at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque.

    Keith McQueen, '94, is the set designer at Creede Repertory Theater this season. McQueen has also designed sets for operas and plays in Las Cruces. Catherine Castillo Fresquez, '94, has entered the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque.

    Devon Zastrow, '94, was one of six students accepted to the University of Colorado Health Science Center's Neurosciences Ph.D. program in Denver.

    Daniel A. Mata, '94, successfully completed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination in May 1995. He is employed in the governmental audit department of Rister, Dunbar, Broaddus & Company, CPAs in El Paso.

    Dr. Charles Blanchard, '94, has joined the staff of Southwest Counseling Center Inc. as a clinical director. Blanchard is certified as a trained treatment guardian for the mentally ill, a Ropes course instructor and in Outward Bound wilderness therapy.

    Kary S. Bulsterbaum, '95, has been named an account manager for Xerox of El Paso and will market products and services.

    Krishnan E. Suraj, '95, is an environmental engineer for COMPA Industries Inc. in Albuquerque.

    Katy Elston, '95, is a full-time officer with the NMSU Police Department. Elston graduated from the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy on Oct. 27, 1995.

    Stan Chavez, '95, is a student at the University of New Mexico School of Law in Albuquerque.

    Kimberly A. Richards, '95, is attending the University of New Mexico School of Law.

    Sean Darby, '95, has been commissioned a U.S. Army second lieutenant upon completion of ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash.

    Brady Tigert, '95, is head softball coach at Artesia (N.M.) High School. He is also doubling at Artesia Junior High School as a science teacher and assistant coach for the eighth-grade football program.

    Marine 2nd Lt. James S. Whiteker, '95, recently graduated from Marine Corps Basic School. Whiteker joined the Marine Corps in January 1995.

    Jeff Lara, '95, is a substance abuse counselor at Guidance Center of Lea County, N.M., and is also the Big Brothers/Big Sisters coordinator. Jennifer Slightom, '95, is a staff accountant with Pulakos & Alongi Ltd., a certified public accounting firm in Albuquerque. She is responsible for assisting with tax return preparation, as well as accounting and audit services.

    Tony Johnson, '95, teaches agriculture at Alamogordo (N.M.) High School. The school's FFA program has nearly doubled in size since Johnson began teaching.

    Patti L. Johnson, '95, has joined the staff of accounting firm Friesen, Fritschy, Fritschy & Overstreet, Certified Public Accountants in Carlsbad, N.M. She will be a member of the firm's small business service staff.

    Tommy Deerman, '95, teaches sixth-grade at Artesia (N.M.) Intermediate School.

    Ron Rendon, '95, is producer/director of Show, a 1950's style bachelor magazine featuring local video productions. Show aired on Las Cruces TV Cable Channel 5 every Friday during September 1995. A collection of its highlights was featured at the Mesilla Valley Film Festival Sept. 22-24.

    Marine 2nd Lt. Darryl L. Jelinek, '95, graduated from U.S. Marine Corps Basic School. Jelinek joined the Marine Corps in 1990.
