Edwin "Ed" Mechem, '36, recently celebrated 25 years on the federal bench as a U.S. district judge in Albuquerque. Mechem is a former governor of New Mexico and a former U.S. senator. Mechem, 83, took senior status in 1982 when he turned 70. Although he could have retired, he maintains an active caseload of about 200 civil cases and comes to the office on Saturdays. In November 1995, his longtime secretary, Charlotte Bates, arranged a surprise luncheon to celebrate the judge's quarter-century on the bench. It drew ex-clerks and judges from as far as New York. "I couldn't have done it without you," Mechem told the crowd.
J. Henry Gustafson, '40, was recently elected city councilor for District 2 in Las Cruces. Shelby Armstrong, '41, and Lucile White Armstrong, '42, spend summers at their home at the Hidden Valley golf course in Aztec, N.M., and winters near the Mount Graham Golf Course in Safford, Ariz., since their retirement. Shelby owned Aztec Hardware Company prior to retirement, and Lucile taught or served as elementary school librarian for 30 years until her retirement in 1983. James "Jim" Craig Ogden, '42, and his wife, Mary "Sue" Forehand Ogden, are recipients of the A.J. Crawford Pioneer Award. James and Sue have been active in national, state and local farm and ranch organizations. They have supported youth activities such as 4-H and FFA in Eddy County and Carlsbad, N.M. Bernice Willis, '46, and Hank Willis, '47, of Albuquerque celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at NMSU Homecoming '95.
Keith Avery, '55, is a cowboy, poet and painter. His latest publication is Trails of a Wanderer, published by Guy Logsdon Books. Campfire Echoes, the Art and Poetry of Keith W. Avery, was published last year and proceeds from its sales have gone to NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics. Wayne Usrey, '59, owns Studio W, an El Paso art gallery that specializes in Western representational art. Betty Sims Solt, '59, is secretary-treasurer of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA). She is enrolling NIRA alumni to get ready for the 1996 reunion in Bozeman, Mont. Champions from 1986, 1976, 1956 and 1951, as well as all pre-NIRA contestants, will be honored June 14-15 during the College National Finals Rodeo. Alex Sanchez, '56, is Albuquerque Technical Vocation Institute's third president. He served as director of Dona Ana County Occupational Education Branch of NMSU, then moved to the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell where he was academic dean from 1977-1979. From 1979-1989, Sanchez worked at the University of New Mexico.
Dr. William Deering, '60, was promoted to professor of physics at the University of North Texas in Denton. Charles L. Klaudt, '60, was appointed to the Washington State Independent Living Advisory Council by Gov. Mike Lowry for a three-year term. The purpose of the council is to give advice on laws and regulations that affect persons with disabilities. J.B. Pruett, '62, was appointed last summer by state Gov. Gary Johnson to serve on the state Construction Industries Commission and is the only representative for southern New Mexico. Pruett is president and owner of Wooten Construction in Las Cruces. Charles Anthony Sayre, '62, the longest-serving district highway engineer in New Mexico, has ended his 18-year career as district highway engineer. He brought about many changes in southern New Mexico's highway system, including overseeing the completion of the interstate highway system and a paved a road to the Alamo Navajo reservation near Magdalena, N.M. Dr. Dev Chopra, '64, has been honored as one of the first Regents Professors at East Texas State University in Commerce. He is a faculty member in the university's department of physics. Ruben A. Smith, '65, has been re-elected as mayor of Las Cruces. He has served as full-time mayor since 1991. Richard Llanez, '66, and his wife, Mary Helen, run the Ric-Llan Farm Inc., south of Anthony, N.M. This year they are farming 280 acres with alfalfa, cotton, (Pima and Upland) and chile. The LlanezÔs also raise garden varieties for customers and restaurants. Thomas Gallegos, '68, has been appointed chief professional officer for the engineering category of the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps by acting Surgeon General Audrey F. Manley.
Delbert C. Dyche, '70, has been named the new director of the local senior citizens' program in Los Alamos, N.M. He is personnel director for Los Alamos Public Schools. Jeanette G. Hall, '70, was promoted to LTC in the Arizona Army National Guard as the Chief, Office of Substance Abuse in the State Area Command Headquarters. She lives in Tempe, Ariz., and works as the human resources officer for the Arizona Health Care Containment System. William Mike Griffin, '70, has been named general manager of John Deere Company's new Las Cruces operation. Griffin was former plant manager of Baltimore Spice in Anthony, Texas. Teofilo Holguin, '71, has been selected to fill a new administrative position, created at White Sands Missile Range, for the management of base operations. Gayland Bryant, '71, has been selected as the new public information officer for Sandoval County, N.M. Bryant began his career in 1971 as a journalist with United Press International, where he held several positions including Midwest regional executive, southwest regional executive and New Mexico bureau manager. Jose Frietze, '72, was recently elected to the Las Cruces City Council. He is chief executive officer for Families and Youth Inc. and has served 10 years on the Las Cruces School Board. Frank DuBois, '73, New Mexico agriculture secretary, was selected Cattleman of the Year by the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association. Gordon Mike McDow, '73, '75, is chief of the business and industry program of the rural Economic and Community Development Service in Albuquerque. Joyce Lankford Allman, '73, '89, has received a doctorate in communications with an emphasis in interpersonal communications from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Allman's specialization is physician-patient communication. Rudy Franco, '73, was appointed warden of La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution in July 1995. Joe Remondini, '74, was selected Floodplain Manager of the Year at the Oklahoma Floodplain Management Association Annual Conference at Lake Texoma. Remondini is assigned as coordinator of Floodplain management services for the Tulsa district office. William F. Corcoran, '75, was guest speaker for a Veteran's Day observance at Ashley Pond and the Los Alamos County, N.M., Municipal Building. He is retired from a 22-year career with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Corcoran serves as an affiliate with the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics and works as a novice cook with the American Legion Mess Hall Restaurant. Juan Franco, '76, was the main speaker for the 1995 NMSU Chicano Programs annual Hispanic Heritage Luncheon. Franco became associate vice president for academic affairs at NMSU in 1990. Philip G. Jones, '76, has been promoted to mechanical technician at Chino Mines in Silver City, N.M. Claude J. Law, '76, former acting director of the community college division at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, was named director. Law has been associated with the university since 1981. He recently was awarded a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Navy Cmdr. John K. Larsh, '76, received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal while serving with the Office of Military Cooperation in Kuwait. Larsh is an air operations officer at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. Edward Lujan, '77, was named one of Albuquerque's 10 most influential people by the New Mexico Business Journal. Lujan is an insurance executive who has been active in Republican politics. He once headed the state Republican Party. Cristino Y. Armienta, '77, is a Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class who has recently reported as a crew member aboard the fast combat support ship USS Rainier home ported in Bremerton, Wash. Bob Tachau, '77, '84, was appointed manager of engineering projects and explosives applications at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque. He was a systems analyst from 1993 until his promotion. Henry Estrada, '78, is bandmaster for the Los Lunas (N.M.) Tiger band. His 100-piece band was selected to march in the Hollywood Christmas parade on Dec. 3, 1995. Before going to Los Lunas, Estrada worked with the Alamogordo, N.M., schools for four years and two years as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico. Larry A. Goldstone, '78, in June 1993 started a Real Estate Investment Trust with six people. Today, the Santa Fe-based Thornburg Mortgage Asset Corporation, of which Goldstone is president, has total assets of $1.8 billion. Kathy M. Quitberg, '78, has been accepted into the professional veterinary medical program at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Roger D. Sears, '78, received a promotion to supervisory agent at the U.S. Border Patrol's Alamogordo, N.M., station. Prior to his entrance to the Border Patrol in 1981, he taught at Alamogordo High School and at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Ga. In 1991, Roger served a one-year term as president of the 12th Judicial District Law Enforcement Association. Imelda Garcia-Cesares, '79, has joined the NMSU Cooperative Extension Service as a home economist in Santa Fe County. Kermit "Ken" Schauer, '79, '83, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union in Las Cruces. Schauer has served on the board for the past six years. Schauer is assigned to the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary in New Mexico and holds the rank of colonel.
