Former Aggies compete in U.S. Open

The New Mexico State women’s golf program was well represented at the 2007 Ladies Professional Golf Association U.S. Open by four former women’s golfers – A.J. Eathorne ’98, Alena Sharp ’03, Kelly Cavanaugh ex. ’03 and Gwladys Nocera ’00. This marked the first time in the NMSU women’s golf program that four former Aggies played in the same U.S. Open event.

“This just goes to show that the NMSU women’s golf program is a great stepping stone for women golfers who have dreams of playing at the next level,” said Paul Brilliant, NMSU women’s golf head coach.

Although the four golfers failed to make the cut, Sharp, Eathorne and Cavanaugh missed by only one stroke.

Eathorne has recorded 15 top 10 finishes in her six years on tour.

Sharp joined an elite list of former Aggies this past fall as she fired a 2-over-par 362 at the 2005 LPGA Tour Qualifying School to earn her tour card for the 2006 season.

Nocera is currently ranked third on the European Tour money list with $111,447.

Cavanaugh is firing off her best numbers as a professional this year. She has played in 11 tournaments finishing in the top-10 twice and the top-25 five times.
