Paul Klipsch, 26, was inducted Oct. 16 into the National Engineering
and
Science Hall of Fame for inventing one of the world's best-known amplifier
systems, the Klipschorn loudspeaker system.
Clayborne Taylor, '65, is now a professor and associate dean of
engineering at Mississippi State University.
Ralph G. Torres, '67, has been reappointed to a second term on the
State
Board for Community College and Occupational Education by Gov. Roy Romer
of Colorado.
Jimmy Miller, '68, has been selected to receive the top national
community
college teaching award from the Association of Community College Trustees.
He is a professor of political science and history at New MexicoÕs San
Juan College.
Barbara Van Pelt, '73, was named as Truth or Consequences, N.M.'s
Hot
Springs High School's new principal during the June school board meeting.
Lydia Bruner, '74, has been appointed director of financial aid at
NMSU.
Karen Roberts George, '74, received the Fort Bliss Federal Credit
Union
Award for classified staff at NMSU's fall 1997 convocation.
Jennifer Craig, '75, was named 1997 Women In Business Advocate by
the New
Mexico Small Business Administration. Craig is the regional manager at
Women's Economic Self-Sufficiency Team (WESST), a nonprofit corporation.
From the Las Cruces office, she oversees a region that includes southern
New Mexico.
Patrick L. McGuire, '75, received an award of excellence from
Atlantic
Richfield Co. and donated the cash part of the award to NMSU's mechanical
engineering department.
Allan L. Paul, '75, recently completed the Ironman Canada
Triathlon, a
2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run in Penticton, British
Columbia. Paul, a medical doctor, has a private practice in Alamogordo,
N.M.
Luis "Nacho" Quinones, '75, has been selected by the Hispanic
Border
Leadership Institute to pursue a doctoral degree at NMSU in educational
management and development.
William P. Soules, '77, has been hired as principal of C.C. Snell
Middle
School in New Mexico's Cobre School District.
Rick Beeman, '78, was recently installed as president of the New
Mexico
Society of Public Accountants at the annual convention in Albuquerque. He
has served on the board of governors for NMSPA for the past six years in
various positions.
Tom Longwill, '79, was sworn in as president of the Roswell, N.M.,
Rotary
Club. He is a 13-year member of the club and Rotary International.
John Viescas, '79, is a systems developer at General Electric
Aircraft
Engines in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Steve Stearns, '93, was named president of Norwest Bank in Silver
City,
N.M. Stearns is the youngest bank president in New Mexico. He was
previously vice president of Norwest Bank in Las Cruces.
Andrea Sutten, '93, has been named director of communications for
the
Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. Sutten served three year as
assistant communication officer to Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez.
Mary D. Berry, '94, was one of the recipients of the 1997
Governor's Award
for Distinguished New Mexico Women. She was nominated by the American
Association of University Women. A reception, presided over by Gov. Gary
Johnson and First Lady Dee Johnson, was held in June.
Eric Garcia, '94, recently completed the U.S. Marines' Fleet
Replacement
Squadron Program and was designated a CH-46E helicopter co-pilot. Garcia
reported for duty with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 162, 2nd Marine
Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station New River, Jacksonville, N.C. He
has been with the Marine Corps since 1988.
Sherri Rhodes Smith, '94, was hired by Lakeview Christian Nursing Home
in
Carlsbad, N.M., as comptroller. Smith also will supervise office
personnel.
Eric Dalton, '95, former Aggie baseball player, has expanded his
concrete
refinishing business, Increte Systems of Las Cruces. His company
refinishes surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways, patios and pool decks.
Isaac E. Chavez, '96, was accepted into the Japan Exchange Teaching
program. Chavez will live in Japan for two years, teaching English in a
high school in Nagasaki City. He is a member of the U.S. Army Reserves.
Sylvia Flores, '96, was hired as principal for Yucca Elementary
School in
Artesia, N.M., where she taught first grade in 1987. Since 1992, she was a
fourth grade teacher at Hermosa Elementary School.
Chrystal Kurimski, '96, has been hired as the new MDS coordinator
at
Lakeview's Northgate Unit in Carlsbad, N.M. Kurimski will be the health
team leader responsible for resident assessment and care plans.
James J. Arnold, '97, was commissioned as a second lieutenant
through the
NMSU Air Force ROTC program. He is the son of Deane and Selma Arnold of
Santa Fe, N.M.
Ashley Lankford, '97, was hired as a certified public accountant by
Barraclough & Associates.
Thomas Bureau McDonald, '97, has been appointed to a six-year term
on the
Governor's Commission of Higher Education by Gov. Gary Johnson of New
Mexico. McDonald is the marketing director and a surveillance investigator
for Cobra Co., a regional insurance fraud investigations firm. He oversees
the company's corporate offices in Albuquerque.
Robert S. McLean, '97, was commissioned as a second lieutenant
through the
NMSU Air Force ROTC program. He is the son of Robert McLean and Hiroko
McLean, both of Alamogordo, N.M.
Anthony Webster, '97, is working with the Mescalero Apache tribe
in
Mescalero, N.M., to transcribe Apache words and phrases into a medical
dictionary. He is using a Navajo format font. The project, slated for
completion in October 1998, received a $6,000 grant obtained through
NMSU's sociology and anthropology department.
John Havener, '78, a chemical engineering graduate, has invented an
air-emission modeler, worked overseas, endured the untimely deaths of two
children and adopted a baby boy. His life is a whirlwind Ñ some of it
magic, and some of it tragic.
Under the heading of "magic," he'd like to find two old friends.
Havener said he's been searching for 15 years for 'some of the best
friends I ever had in life": Allan Mobs, '78, and Sam Harris, '76.
Havener, originally of Lake Arthur, N.M., lives in Liberty Hill,
Texas, with wife Tami (Vaughn) Havener, '77, of Silver City, N.M. Two of
their three natural children, Patrick, 15, and Roxann, 13, were killed in
a car wreck in March of 1995. The middle child, Tara, 17, is a senior at
Liberty Hill High. John and Tami adopted Joshua, 2, in 1995.
In 1994, Havener was issued a U.S. patent for a system that models
air emissions from combustion processes. This product fueled the success
of Pavilion Technologies, which he joined in 1993.

Carl Roberts, '63, has retired after 34 years of service to NMSU. He

Connie Moyers, '73, began work for NMSU's Cooperative Extension
Service in
July as the home economist in Roosevelt County. She will work with 4-H
youth and with home economics projects and provide guidance for adult
leaders and family and community education volunteers.

Nancy LaPointe, '93, recently expanded her consulting services in
Las
Cruces to include helping seniors and their families assess care options.
LaPointe is a social worker in the eldercare consulting field. She has 25
years experience in medical-related fields and has worked with long-term
care and as a consultant to area facilities for the last five years.
Gabriel Lampert, '76, '93, had his novella "Reptile Triptych"
published in
the Summer 1997 issue of Evergreen Chronicles, a literary magazine for the
gay and lesbian community. The piece was one of two winners in the
magazine's annual novella contest. Lampert's story "Journey," published in
the magazine Response last spring, is on the syllabus of a course titled
"Jewish Short Stories of the 20th Century" at Cleveland College of Jewish
Studies. Lampert earned a doctorate in educational research and a master
of arts degree in creative writing at NMSU, where he teaches mathematics.
