Colorado Barbecue
It had been a long time since alumni in Colorado had gotten together. Julie Hall, '83, was kind enough to help organize a great barbecue on July 31. Sixty-five Colorado Aggies attended the "thunderstorm picnic" appropriately named by Joe Creed, '59, interim vice president for advancement. We are Aggies but were smart enough to rent a covered area for the barbecue.
Classes were represented from the 1930s to 1990s. Everyone enjoyed meeting new friends and seeing old ones.
This group is ready for annual Colorado events. Any ideas or volunteers are always welcome.
While in Colorado Springs, Mike Walker, '63, and Julie Hall, '83, had made arrangements for visits with Lockheed Martin and JNTR. It is always fun to see where our graduates work. It was a pleasure to hear how proud companies are of our Aggies.
Bay Area Get-together
Herb, '50, and Edith, '47, Edde, were our hosts for the annual Bay Area Alumni Get-together. They had a wonderful idea, winery tours followed by a barbecue. Attendees all agreed it was very enjoyable and the food was fantastic, based on comments and empty plates. Herb and Edith should start a catering business. Jack Burleson, '44, and Bill Wunsch, '46, are still hoping someone will become the ringleader for events, but they continue to be voted the chairmen. I know each of them welcomes ideas from fellow Aggies. The barbecue was a great success, so we will keep working on finding new fun ideas.
Washington, D.C., Area 3Bs
One hundred twenty-two Aggies got together Sept. 25 for the bi-annual 3Bs, also known as Beans, Burritos and Beer. I know why we meet every other year: these guys do all the cooking and clean up. Eve and Kent, '41, McIntosh are the driving force behind this wonderful event.
Brad, '72, and Zuana Cates were our gracious hosts. Brad has let us use his home for this party since the early 1980s. I have been going to them since 1983.
This year the weather was gorgeous, probably the best we have ever had. NMSU President Bill Conroy and First Lady Patty Conroy, Interim Vice President for University Advancement Joe Creed, '59, and his wife Priscilla, '56, and I were the guests. This group doesnŐt let us help with the work, just enjoy all of theirs.
Not only do they cook and clean, they even saved some money. Kent presented me with a $410.50 check for scholarships. Thank you to all our helpers. I look forward to seeing you in 2001.
I must admit, I did feel a bit old seeing Karen Goff Kelliher, '87, with her young son. Karen worked for the alumni office as a student.
Albuquerque Kickoff Party
On Sept. 11 Frank Paul, '95, and Marty Finley, '93, hosted a kickoff party for Albuquerque alumni at the Ramada Mountain View Hotel. Quite a number of classes were represented, and most of the graduates were from the '80s and '90s.
Marty and Frank know how to throw a party. They are interested in getting Aggies together for other events, so if you are interested please let us know.
Football '99 Tailgates
This year the Alumni Office, Aggie Scholarship Association, and colleges of agriculture, business and engineering joined forces to sponsor tailgate parties in Albuquerque, Phoenix, El Paso and Fort Collins, Colo.
We had a great time visiting with alumni and friends at each one. On the road we scored wins against the Lobos and Arizona State. I imagine ASU is still stunned.
NMSU vs. Army
At Panorama's presstime, the Aggies were set to play Army at West Point Oct. 23. Mike Kozeliski, '96, and Meridith Culbertson, '97, organized a bus trip for those in the Washington, D.C., area to travel to New York for the game. Everyone riding the bus, along with fellow Aggies in New York, were invited to tailgate before the game. I'll write more on this event in the spring issue of this newsletter.
The Alumni Association and NMSU Foundation were scheduled to host a reception at the West Point Club Oct. 23. Our thanks to Col Marcus Madrid, '68. Madrid was instrumental in making it possible to have a meeting in the club. Again, more on this event in the next Panorama.
Homecoming 2000
The dates have been set for next year's Homecoming activities. Mark your calendar for Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 12-14, 2000.
ROTC Reunion 2000
Past members of NMSU's ROTC program are invited to join in a ROTC tailgate party to kick off the NMSU vs. University of Tulsa Homecoming football game Oct. 14. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Gary Cataldo, '70, is in charge of the ROTC event. Alumni who would like to lend a hand should contact the Alumni Relations Office.
