The NMSU volleyball team has transformed into a team that has won three consecutive Sun Belt Conference titles.
NMSU volleyball head coach Mike Jordan can be credited with driving this transformation. Under Jordan, the team has gone from 7-22 in 1998 to 30-5 in 2003.
“You have to have good athletes,” Jordan says. “We have been able to improve our level of athleticism.”
Jordan became the NMSU volleyball head coach in 1998 after serving as an assistant coach at Utah State. He began his coaching career at a junior high school and obtained his first high school coaching position in 1990 in California.
“He pushes his players to be the best, provides unconditional love for the game and pride,” says Jackie Godber, a defensive specialist who was named the Las Cruces Sun-News Top Female Athlete of the Year and the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.
Jordan was named the 2003 Sun Belt Coach of the Year and Godber says he deserves this honor because he builds confidence and courage in his players. Jordan’s confidence in his team led them to their first trip to the NCAA Championship and their first Sun Belt Conference Championship.
Jordan has already broken NMSU records for the most wins (30) and conference wins (15) in a season and is only four wins away from breaking Tom Shoji’s career wins record of 115.
Jordan has not only made great strides on the court, but off the court as well. He helped pull in almost 16,000 fans last season, ranking 22nd in the country in average attendance.
“Everything we do has a competitive atmosphere,” Jordan says. Jordan would like to have a least 2,000 people in attendance for every game next season and win another conference championship as well as push all of his athletes to graduate.
“He gives every bit of energy, heart and devotion to our team all the time,” Godber says.
