Love of Animals Leads to Endowments

When Las Cruces resident Jacqueline Cook passed away in 2003 at the age of 78, she wanted her estate to make a difference. She had no academic connections to NMSU but she loved animals, particularly horses and dogs.

That led to her decision to establish two endowments in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics for the Departments of Animal and Range Sciences and Agricultural and Extension Education. The departments can use the money to support scholarships and other student needs.

“The gift from Jacqueline Cook is a tremendous boost for the Agricultural and Extension Education Department and our students interested in careers with the Cooperative Extension Service,” says Department Head Tom Dormody. “We will use the yearly earnings to provide scholarships and financial support for students on extension internships, and to cover travel expenses for students attending extension conferences.”

Mark Wise, department head for animal and range sciences, expressed similar sentiments. “The generous gift of Jacqueline Cook to the Department of Animal and Range Sciences will have a tremendous impact on many of our students,” he says.
