J.R. Nunn, '50, has been named one of New Mexico's Top 100 Power Brokers by New Mexico Business Weekly Magazine. Nunn has been the longtime CEO of Citizens Bank in Tucumcari. He also serves on the board of the Independent Bankers Association of America and is chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Independent Community Bankers Assocation of New Mexico.

Keith Colson, '56, 62, has been inducted into NMSU's Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions as athletic director in 1975-86.

Roger Edward "Ed" Mayfield Jr., '58, was selected as president of Mesilla Valley Writers. Since Mayfield retired from NMSU in 1996, he has pursued his passion for writing.

Don A. Yannessa, '63, head football coach and athletic director at Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh, Pa., will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Football Coaches Hall of Fame this summer. Yanessa has been inducted into the Aliquippa Sports Hall of Fame, Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame and the Las Cruces Sports Hall of Fame.

Betsy Jackson Copolillo, '66, teacher of mathematics and Latin, was named the National Football League's Teacher of the Year. As the 1997-98 Teacher of the Year for Hendersonville High School in Hendersonville, N.C., Copolillo will represent her school in local, state and national competitions.

Roy Morgan and Elizabeth Ingram Morgan, both '66, have returned to New Mexico after 27 years in Indiana. Roy is executive director of the National Information Center for Educational Media in Albuquerque. Elizabeth was assistant director of Food and Nutrition Services at Bloomington (Ind.) Hospital for 14 years. Jim Creager, '68, and Kim Dalton Linder, '88, '91, '95, engineers at Allied Signal, were given Excellence in Technology Transfer Awards from the Federal Laboratory Consortium for their efforts on a project to detect Karnal Bunt spores in wheat samples.

Charles Engelking, '69, retired from the Lincoln County, N.M., Sheriff's Department after 21 years in law enforcement.

Rob Evans, '69, was named The Associated Press Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year. Evans led the University of Mississippi to the West Division championship. Evans declined a recent offer from Louisiana State University to coach men's basketball and will remain in his current position at Mississippi. Lucille King, '69, is the newly elected superintendent of the Portales, N.M., Municipal Schools.

Mary T. Scott, '69, is the newly appointed interim superintendent of the Alamogordo, N.M., Public School District.

John Van Sweden, '69, of Raton, N.M., has been appointed to the NMSU Board of Regents by Gov. Gary Johnson. Van Sweden is the chief spokesperson and executive officer for the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau and is board president of Western Farm Bureau Life Insurance Corporation.

Gilbert Candelaria, '70, is a member of the Alamogordo, N.M., Board of Education. Candelaria has been a teacher and administrator at Alamogordo Public Schools for 20 years.

J. Kent Cooper, '70, and Charles C. Kretek, 89, have formed the law firm of Cooper, Kretek & Associates in Deming, N.M.

Jack Groves, '70, president of Groves, Wray & Associates in Albuquerque, was the featured speaker at the College of Engineering's annual Bromilow Lecture in February. Groves, a consultant on energy matters, discussed changes in the country's electrical utility industry. Groves was honored with other NMSU engineering graduates as a Distinguished Centennial Alumnus.

Barbara Hubbard, '70, retired director of special events, continues to serve NMSU as a part-time athletic development coordinator and adviser to the Associated Students of NMSU.

David Lloyd Sais, '71, has been named Valencia County's interim director. Sais has been with the county since 1992.

Stirling Spencer, '71 was appointed by Gov. Gary Johnson to fill a vacancy on the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Board. Spencer is Lincoln County probate judge.

Stephen D. Maas, '73, formerly deputy director, was appointed director of the Employment Security Division at the New Mexico Department of Labor.

Alice Cooksey, '74, of Pantego, Texas, has her own business, Lone Star Custom Quilting, which she started in 1995. Her husband, Dave Cooksey, '74, has recently been upgraded to 727 Captain for Delta Air Lines. Samuel Davidson, '74, has retired as a detective with the Farmington, N.M., Police Department. He served there since 1989. Mike Petty, '74, has retired from the Farmington, N.M., Police Department. Petty began as a patrolman in 1974 and became a detective in 1976.

Jaime T. Provencio, '74, is the new Bureau of Land Management manager for the Lake Havasu Field Office. He manages operations on the Lake Havasu Fisheries Improvement Program and other partnerships, as well as a recreation program on public lands along the California and Arizona border.

Diana Barela, '75, teacher at Roosevelt Middle School, was honored as the Physical Education Teacher of the Year for the state of New Mexico.

Laura Conniff, '75, co-owner and co-broker of Mathers Realty, has been appointed as an advisory board director for Western Bank. Conniff also serves as a board member for the Memorial Medical Foundation, the Mesilla Valley Hospice and the NMSU PresidentŐs Associates.

Karen Leigh Parsons, '75, was appointed district judge in the 12th District Court by New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, following in her fatherŐs footsteps and filling his seat following his retirement. She had been a partner of the Parsons, Bryant & Morel, P.A. law firm in Ruidoso, N.M.

Aileen Schumacker-Blum, '75, president of the engineering firm of Blum, Schumacher & Associates in Gainesville, Fla., wrote the novel Engineered for Murder, which is set in New Mexico.

Julie H. Wilson, '75, has become the president and CEO of Regian & Wilson, the largest advertising agency in Tarrant County, Texas. Wilson has been with the company since 1987, becoming a named partner in 1994. She is the chairperson of the Harris Health Exchange and a board member of the Women's Center.

Shelley J. Kollar, '76, recently reported for duty at Naval Hospital in Groton, Conn. Lt. Cmdr. Kollar joined the U.S. Navy in June 1990.

Eddie Padilla Jr., '76, was promoted to vice president of bulk power marketing and development with the Public Service Co. of New Mexico. He has been with the utility for nearly 20 years, most recently as director of commodity marketing.

Daryl J. DeNomme, '77, of Las Vegas, Nev., works for Southwest Medical Outpatient Surgery Center as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Dick Paulk, '78, manager of facility placement and scheduling for PNM Electric Services, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the New Mexico One Call System, a non-profit organization that operates a statewide "call before you dig" service.

Clarence Chavez, '79, has become the martial arts instructor for classes at the Pueblo of Isleta Recreation Center, as part of its "Simply the Best" programs. Chavez offers martial arts classes in Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Okinawan styles.

Stephen R. Janus, '79, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., has joined the board of directors at Sierra Bank. Janus is an active participant in the Sierra County Economic Development Corporation and the Sierra County Chamber of Commerce.

Jim Smith, '79, was awarded a $26,000 fellowship from the Christa McAuliffe fellowship program. Smith plans to write a history book with a series of lessons that teach American history using original source readings. Smith teaches history at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces.

Susan McCarter Thorpe, '79, was chosen to serve on Kestrel Corporation's board of directors. Thorpe has been the financial operations manager for Kestrel since November 1996.

Ken Wernle, '79, has been appointed to BD Systems's New Mexico Operations staff. Wernle was working for the company's Holloman Air Force Base, supporting operational testing of U.S. Air Force aircrafts.

James Ellington, '80, is the first native New Mexican to head a New Mexico manufacturing plant for Intel. Having been with the company his entire professional career, Ellington took over as the manager of Intel's Fab 9 plant earlier this year.

Janine Twomey, '80, associate provost for instruction at NMSU's Alamogordo campus since 1994, was named director of the campus.

Michael Jacks, '80, a history teacher at Gadsden Middle School in Anthony, N.M., and colleagues Clay Chadwick, '95, a language arts teacher, and Sara Torres, a science teacher, have won NMSU's 1997 French Award for Improvement of Secondary Teaching. They will use a $3,000 cash prize for a team project, "Curriculum on the Rio Grande," which focuses on the river's water quality, history and impact on society.

Judy Miller, '81, of Santa Clara, N.M., is a new teacher at Snell Middle School. Miller spent the past eight years as a home economist and customer service representative for Texas-New Mexico Power Company.

Harley W. "Beaver" Segotta, '81, was appointed to the State Racing Commission. Segotta is vice president and general manager of Pacific Studs & Lumber Company Inc. of Cimarron, N.M.

James Lujan, '82, is the new public works director for Rio Arriba County, N.M. Lujan was the network manager for La Jicarita Enterprise Committee. He was Espanola's planning director and public works director from 1988 to 1995.

Melvin Christopher, 83, has been promoted to vice president of metro gas operations and chief engineer at The Public Service Co. of New Mexico.

Sandy Davenport, '83, was hired as community relations director for New Hope Hospice in Las Cruces. Davenport previously worked as coordinator of field management development for First American Home Care.

Mitch Mauer, '83, received one of nine awards presented by the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association. Mauer is the line maintenance superintendent for water utilities for the City of Las Cruces.

Jerry H. Ritter Jr., '83, an Alamogordo, N.M., attorney, has become the new judge for Division I Court of the Twelfth Judicial District as appointed by Gov. Gary Johnson. Ritter has served on the Committee on Delivery of Legal Services to People with Disabilities, and the Natural Resources and Indian Law Sections of the State Bar of New Mexico.

Nick Jenkins, '84, was reappointed to the Commission for the Blind of New Mexico. Jenkins is owner, operator and talk show host for KCCC Radio. He has been an Eddy County commissioner and chairman and a past secretary of the New Mexico Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

Jerry Paz, '84, was appointed as one of the new vice presidents for Molzen-Corbin & Associates. Paz has been with the firm since 1983 and is branch manager of the Las Cruces office.

Richard Allen Smith, '84, was promoted to principal engineer by McDonnell Douglas Space & Defense Systems. He will lead the system engineering, installations and integration activities associated with the ground-based computer system which will test Space Station elements at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Jeff M. Witte, '84, was appointed to a three-year term on the board of directors of Farm Credit Services of New Mexico.

Joseph Geronimo, '85, a Mescalero Apache traditional healer, wrote a letter to New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson on behalf of New Mexico's children. With help from 18 family members and friends, the letter, which asked the governor to proclaim 1997 the "Year of the Child," was literally run nearly 200 miles from the Mescalero reservation to the state Capitol.

Robert Kurtz, '85, was promoted to district traffic engineer with the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department in Roswell.

Rola Idriss, '87, NMSU civil engineering associate professor, was named one of the world's top 25 leaders cited for achievement by Engineering News Record, a weekly news magazine for the construction industry. Idriss implemented the first fiber-optic bridge monitoring system on a full-scale bridge (See Panorama story on page 7).

Eric Johnson, '87, an associate professor of electrical engineering, won the NMSU College of Engineering's Bromilow Award for Research. Johnson, who also serves as director of the Parallel Architecture Research Laboratory at NMSU, was recognized for his research in computers and communications.

Kim Trujillo-Cummings, '87, is in business for herself, working from home as a public relations consultant. She appears in TV commercials and writes articles for various magazines. Trujillo-Cummings is the president-elect for the Hispano Women's Council in Albuquerque.

Albert M. Thomas, '87, was appointed vice president of Bohannan-Huston Inc., a multi-disciplined engineering, photogrammetry, survey and landscape architectural firm. Thomas has been with the firm for 15 years. He serves as president of the New Mexico Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

C. Brian Charlton, '88, was recently named a director in the Miller, Stratvert, Torgerson & Schlenker, P.A., law firm in Albuquerque. Charlton has been practicing law with the firm since graduating from Hastings College of Law in 1991.

Arturo Ruiloba III, '89, has joined NMSU's Agricultural Communications Department as a media specialist working with video production and will oversee bilingual and trilingual projects.

David Salopek, '89, was appointed to the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board. Salopek is a managing partner in David Salopek Farms of Las Cruces. He is president of the Western Pecan Growers Association and a board member of La Union Soil and Water Conservation Service.

Andrew D. Alexander Jr., '90, '92, is president of the Sierra County-Truth or Consequences, N.M., Chamber of Commerce. Alexander has been recognized by Rolex Awards for Enterprise, Special Selections 1992; and the Dona Ana Historical Society, Gemoets Award for outstanding submission to the Southern New Mexico Historical Review, 1997.

Jim Allsup, '90, teacher at Calallen High School in Texas, received a Young Member of the Year Award from the National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.

Patricia N. Bradshaw, '90, was selected to be a member of the Congressional Medical Support Team for the 53rd Presidential Inauguration. Capt. Bradshaw is stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and has served as a member of the U.S. Air Force Advanced Life Support Team.

John Bain, '91, '92, was promoted to vice president of the Western Commerce Bank in Carlsbad, N.M. Bain served as the bank's assistant vice president since 1995 and worked as a credit analyst following graduation.

David E. Casillas, '92, '95, has accepted the position of budget analyst for the City of Las Cruces. He previously worked with the Office of Management and Budget with the City of El Paso. He is a member of the NMSU Alumni Association and is an active volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Dave D'Antonio, '92, received a Certificate of Accomplishment from General Electric for completing an intermediate construction and industrial equipment course. D'Antonio works for Industrial Power Systems in Carlsbad, N.M.

Louise E. Heine, '92, is the new state travel coordinator in the General Services' Transportation Services Division. Heine oversees state contracts for travel services and lodging with more than 116 motels and hotels in New Mexico.

Joann Bosse, '93, formerly with Century 21, has joined ERA Advantage Associates as a marketing coordinator in Las Cruces.

Ammu Devasthali, '93, of Las Cruces, created Art Ventures Studio and Print shop to offer work space, classes and workshops to the community, especially artists.

Alexis Hilty, '93, assistant director for the Carlsbad, N.M., Chamber of Commerce, is now its interim director. Before coming to Carlsbad, Hilty was an independent consultant on tourism, promotion and planning in Washington, D.C.

Jennifer Hopper, '93, '96, was hired by the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau as the director of Ag in the Classroom, a program that teaches children about farming and ranching in the state. Hopper is an active volunteer in 4-H, FFA and FHA.

James A. Maes, '93, was hired as program director of a new dual degree program for New Mexico Highlands University in Farmington. The new dual degree program is designed so that a student who is pursuing an associate of arts degree from San Juan College or anyone who has done some work towards a bachelors degree at other institutions is eligible to enroll in the courses jointly offered by San Juan College and Highlands University.

Nicholas Ashcroft, '94, is a new Cooperative Extension Service specialist with NMSU's Range Improvement Task Force. Ashcroft's duties include helping conduct impact studies on the effects of agricultural policies to New Mexico farmers and ranchers, as well as generating data on economic relationships among businesses in communities statewide.

Ana Gallegos, '94, is the executive director for Sierra County Farm Service Agency after two years with the agency.

Lesa Laue, '94, passed level three waste water certification through the New Mexico Environment Department. As a Dona Ana Branch Community College technician IV, Laue sets up laboratories, manages the waste water treatment prototype and assists the program's instructors and students.

Previously, Weisbart taught computer technology, keyboarding and social studies for Las Cruces Public Schools and was an associate professor at NMSU.

Julie Marie Brown, '96, former reporter for the Roswell (N.M.) Daily Record, is the City of Roswell's new public relations officer.

Shawn W. Dark, '96, received his commission as a naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla. Dark joined the U.S. Navy in October 1996.

Mary Lee Hadrian, '96, was selected as the Sunwest Bank of Las Cruces' SunBest Employee. Hadrian was been with Sunwest since 1994 and was promoted to lead teller at the main branch in Las Cruces.

Michael Kozeliski, '96, was appointed by Congressman Joe Skeen to his Washington, D.C., staff. As a legislative correspondent, he will focus on education, health care, labor and welfare.
