Shaw
Jerome Shaw, '49, of La Jolla, Calif., returned to NMSU on May 16, 1998 to receive an honorary doctorate during commencement ceremonies. Shaw was honored for his entrepreneurial accomplishments and for his excellence in education at NMSU. Shaw is a member of the Dean's Advisory Board for the College of Engineering and a member of the NMSU Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering's Academy. He also is a supporter of the Goddard Hall renovation project and member of the College of Engineering Goddard Society.

60s

Richard Carter, '63, began Rosehill Water Co. Inc., a water company serving new residential subdivisions in the Houston, Texas area. Carter is president of the company.

Reuben Vigil, '63, retired July 3 from Kirtland Air Force Base after 13 years with the base and 20 years with the U.S. Forest Service.

Calvin B. Parnell Jr., '64, received the 1997 Distinguished Service Award from the National Cotton Ginners Association. The award was presented at the association's annual meeting in February in San Antonio, Texas. The award acknowledges outstanding contributions to the U.S. cotton ginning industry and to the ginners association.

Bud Hettinga, '65, was appointed as the state game commissioner of the southwest quadrant of New Mexico. Hettinga is a Las Cruces businessman and general contractor with 30 years of industrial construction and agriculture experience.

Hugh Boyt, '68, was named as Santa Fe Energy's new president and chief operating officer, effective April 1. Boyt has been with the company since 1983 as district manager. He has served as the company's senior vice president for production since 1990.

Lou Medrano, '69, has been appointed as chief civil engineer at Chavez-Grieves Consulting Engineers Inc. Medrano, a registered professional engineer and land surveyor in New Mexico, formerly served as secretary of the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department.

70s

Everett Crawford, '70, president and managing officer of First Security Bank of Southern New Mexico in Las Cruces, has been named a member of the Bank Services Committee for the Independent Bankers Association of America. He was appointed to the committee in recognition of his talents and dedication to community banking.

Tony Thurman, '71, received a law degree from Ohio Northern University on May 17.


Leser
Cody Leser, '78, was recently a Manager of the Year finalist in Orange County, Calif. Leser also was promoted to Western Regional Manager for Novell Corp. This is his third year with the company.


McMillan
Nancy McMillan, '79, was recognized by the Social Workers of Southern New Mexico for building an umbrella alliance for nine services. Among some of the services she has worked with are Casa de Peregrinos and the Community Action Agency's Homeless Program. McMillan describes social workers as "the hope of the world."

James Duffey, '79, is Chaves County's new agricultural agent with NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service. Duffey served as 4-H agent in Chaves County for 22 years before being named agricultural agent in March.

80s

Thomas K. Foster, '82, recently reenlisted for four years while serving aboard the dock landing ship USS Carter Hall, home ported at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Norfolk, Va. Foster is a U.S. Navy petty officer 1st class.


Reval
Abbie S. Reval, '82, has been appointed academic counselor in the University Advisement Center at East Tennessee State University.


Shannon
Brenda M. Shannon, '82, accepted the position of director of internal auditing at NMSU, effective June 1. Shannon served as an accountant II in NMSU's Business Office since 1988 and taught accounting in the Department of Accounting and Business Computer Systems. Shannon is a certified public accountant and has extensive experience with financial systems and fiscal monitoring.


Meyers
Nancy Meyers, '82, '88, has been named executive director of the Dona Ana County Arts Council. Meyers had served as director of annual programs with the Memorial Medical Center Foundation in Las Cruces.

Colin P. Cahoon, '83, has formed the law firm Carstens, Yee and Cahoon. The firm specializes in aviation, technology and intellectual property law, as well as representing several Fortune 500 companies across the United States and internationally. Cahoon is the head of the aviation practice.

Calvin Chavez, '83, was appointed district supervisor for the Office of the State Engineer in Las Cruces. Chavez was formerly with the Water Rights Division of the Office of the State Engineer in Santa Fe.

Timothy John Droelos, '83, graduated from the University of New Mexico in May with his Ph.D. in engineering.

Albrech Eugen Carver, '85, graduated from Clemson University with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering.

Tracy Stuart, '87, is Santa Fe St. Michael High School's new athletic director. Stuart also is the school's varsity football coach.

Dee Gidney, '89, was named to the International Who's Who of Professionals. Gidney is a senior vice president of Texas Bank in San Angelo, Texas.

Ron Lucero, '89, is celebrating his fifth year in business as co-owner of Nabes Coffee Bar and Newsstand in Las Cruces. Nabes has become just what Lucero had envisioned Ð a neighborhood place. LuceroÕs brother, David, is co-owner.

Paul Berver, '90, was the June recipient of the NMSU Computing and Networking Asprey Award. Berver has been working on NMSU's Web registration interface to SUPRA and the VISTAS application, as well as the security interface for SUPRA applications.

Carlos Hernandez, '90, was named LULAC Educator of the Year. Hernandez is a middle school assistant principal and athletic director in Tucumcari, N.M. He is now eligible for the national award.

David Lucero, '91, is celebrating his fifth year in business as co-owner of Nabes Coffee Bar and Newsstand. Lucero's brother, Ron, is co-owner.

Alexis Hilty, '93, has joined Charter Companies in Albuquerque as a marketing coordinator. Hilty will provide support and coordination of marketing and promotion efforts for the four Charter Companies.

Deborah Franzoy, '94, '98, began work in May as program coordinator for NMSU's Rural Economic Development Through Tourism project. Franzoy will work with the hospitality industry to develop and deliver workshops in Dona Ana, Eddy, Lea and Lincoln counties.

Darlene Nelson, '94, was honored for her design work by the New Mexico Press Women. The association presented Nelson with Three first-place awards for graphic design work she produced in 1997. Nelson works at the Alamogordo Space Center.

Roy L. Conn, '96, has been named as team leader of Environmental Engineering Technology with the Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport, Tenn.

Juli Hutchins, '96, was recently hired as the 4-H agent for NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service in Valencia County. Hutchins' job will be to expand youth development and leadership programs for 4-H members.

Lisa Jeffrey, '96, was hired by Sun View Imaging Services in Las Cruces as its new marketing manager. Jeffrey brings five years of experience in marketing and public relations to her new job.


Lazorko
Catherine Lazorko, '96, is the new public information officer for the City of Las Cruces.

Sam and Sean Manuel, ex-'96, former NMSU Aggie football players who were drafted in 1996 by the San Francisco 49ers, are in the May 11 issue of People magazine. The brothers are part of the magazine's "Seeing Double" feature that profiles nine sets of famous fraternal or identical twins.

Tracie D. Johnson-Wagner, '97, an ensign in the U.S. Navy, has completed the Officer Indoctrination Course.

Valerie L. King, '98, joined Dona Ana Branch Community College as student services specialist in DABCC's student development office. King will guide students through the admissions process and inform them of the community college's various services.

Gaven Kuykendall, '98, has been accepted into the professional veterinary medical program at Colorado State University for the fall 1998 term. Kuykendall was one of 130 students selected for the program out of 804 applicants.

Michelle White, '98, joined National Public Radio as a summer 1998 intern. White is a production assistant for NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday program.

Admissions counselor sets up shop


Trujillo
Lara Trujillo, '95, '97, is heading up NMSU's recruitment efforts in the state's largest metropolitan area. Trujillo is the admissions counselor in NMSU's Albuquerque Office of Admissions, which officially reopened in mid-April after two years of being closed.

Trujillo is providing admissions counseling and outreach services to high schools in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and the surrounding counties of Torrance, Sandoval and Valencia. Trujillo said there already has been a good response.

"My main goal right now is to make sure the office is visible," she said.

Trujillo also is revitalizing the Alumni Admissions Volunteer Program, which is designed to get volunteer help from NMSU alumni in the Albuquerque area to assist in NMSU's recruitment efforts. The program includes student mentoring and community outreach.

A native of Santa Fe, Trujillo said she is familiar with northern New Mexico. Trujillo earned her undergraduate degree in journalism and mass communication and her master's in education administration.

Jessie Diann Smith, 1931-1998

Jessie Diann Smith, '55, the first woman to receive a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from NMSU, died May 30, in Mountain View, Calif. She was born July 28, 1931, in Mason City, Iowa.

Smith, known to many by her middle name, was called a woman of firsts. In the 1940s, she built her own radio transmitter and receiver. Her license, WOBDU, was a female first in Mason City.

After receiving her degree, she married Kenneth Smith. The two met at NMSU's Physical Science Laboratory, where they both worked. After working for Ampex Corp. and the birth of their two children, Smith chose full-time homemaking.

In 1972, after almost three years of braille education courses, Smith became certified in literary braille by the National Library of Congress. As a member of the Braille Transcription Project of Santa Clara County, Calif., she helped produce math, physics and engineering textbooks for university students. From 1983-1997, Smith was a computer-assisted braille specialist.

Smith was inducted into the Sociedad de Ingenieros at the 40th year reunion of NMSU's class of 1955.
