Abe M. Pena, '49, of Grants, N.M., and his wife, Viola R. Pena,
a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph Ohio, were presented a "Recognition Award
for Meritorious Service in Hosting Cibola County's Community Programming
and Historical Contributions for the Past 10 Years on Enchanting New
Mexico Television 10" on June 16, 2000. Some 302 TV interviews with
historical content have been donated to the Rio Grande Historical Collections
at NMSU.

Canuto "Newt" Sanchez, '53, of Santa Rosa, N.M., board member
of the Hispanic Cultural Center of New Mexico, has been instrumental
in starting the center. He is a long-time businessman of Santa Rosa.
He has owned a service station, a motel and is currently owner of the
Dairy Queen.
Ronald J. Solimon, '53, of Albuquerque, is the new president
and CEO of Indian Pueblos Marketing Inc. He will oversee IPMI's nonprofit
and for-profit components.
Dee Jay Brown, '55, of Texico, N.M., was elected to the board
of directors of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau, the state's
largest agricultural organization. The eastern New Mexico farmer is
a long-time member of the Curry County Farm and Livestock Bureau board
of directors, a position he will maintain following his election to
the statewide agricultural panel. As a New Mexico Farm Bureau board
member he joins elected farmers and ranchers from all areas of the state
who implement organizational policy and prescribe long-range goals for
the association.

Andrew Nunez, '62, of Hatch, N.M., has retired as legislative
liaison with NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics. He was
recently elected state representative of district 36 in northern Dona
Ana County. Nunez served at NMSU first in the 1970s as director and
project coordinator with International Programs, then in 1991 as legislative
liaison.
Kay Elkins, '64, and Merle Elkins, '73, of Cloudcroft,
N.M., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A reception was held
in their honor at their son's home in Carlsbad. Their children hosted
the event.
Jesse L. Gonzales, '65, of Las Cruces, received his doctorate
in education during the December graduation ceremonies at NMSU. He is
superintendent of Las Cruces Public Schools.

Doug Benson, '66, of Manhattan, Kan., received the 2000
Commerce Bank Presidential Faculty and Staff Award for Distinguished
Services to Minority Students. The award is funded by the William
T. Kemper Foundation and the Commerce Bancshares Foundation. The
Kansas State University professor serves as the co-chair of the
Racial/Ethnic Harmony Week observance, as a member of the American
Ethnic Studies governance board and co-adviser to the Hispanic
American Leadership Organization.
Eluid Martinez, '68, of Santa Fe, will retire as commissioner
of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and return home to Rio Arriba
County. Before going to Washington, Martinez was a leader in New
Mexico water management. He served as state engineer, as secretary
of the New Mexico Interstate and Stream Commission and as a member
of the state Water Quality Commission.

Kerry Boyd, '69, of Santa Fe, was part of the
program for the annual meeting at the Fall 2000 Commercial Investment
Network. He was invited to be on the program because of his knowledge
of agriculture and his success in marketing ranches. The CIN Network
is composed of brokers and agents who specialize in the sale and
marketing of industrial, business, commercial, investment and agricultural
properties. |

Timothy J. Miller, '70, of Farmington, N.M., is a new staff
member at Citizens Trust and Investment Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary
of Citizens Bankshares Inc. Formerly he was with Lincoln Financial in
Los Angeles, serving clients in California, Arizona, Colorado and New
Mexico.
B. Kay Brilliant, '71, of Santa Fe, is the new director of the
National Education Association-New Mexico. Brilliant taught in the Tucson
school district for 27 years and was a senior policy analyst and program
consultant with the union's Western Regional Office.
James Nelson Hoskins, '71, of Grants, N.M., was appointed to
the board of trustees of the miners hospital of New Mexico. Called the
Miners Colfax Medical Center, the hospital is located in Raton. Hoskins
is an electrician for Santa Fe Pacific Corp. Lee Ranch Coal Mine in
San Mateo, where he has worked for 16 years.
Dan Ware, '71, '79, of Las Cruces, the state adviser to the New
Mexico FFA Association, was presented with the "Distinguished Service
to Agriculture Citation," the highest award from the New Mexico Farm
and Livestock Bureau. He received this award during the association's
2000 annual meeting in Las Cruces. He was also involved in fund-raising
activities for the FFA and coordinating the largest state FFA career
development event.
Michael J. Trowse, '72, of Ohatchee, Ala., was appointed lead
engineer for the deployment of the NMD Communications Network and the
in-flight interceptor communication system. This involves the production
of antennae and fiber optic cabling, the construction of facilities
and the replacement of equipment throughout the country and overseas.

Adelmo "Del" Archuleta, '73, of
Albuquerque, was one of two recipients of the National Community
Service award presented by the American Consulting Engineers Council
at its annual fall conference in San Diego, Calif. The award honors
a professional engineer's service to the community.
Merle Elkins, '73, and Kay Elkins, '64, of Cloudcroft,
N.M., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A reception was
held in their honor at their son's home in Carlsbad. Their children
hosted the event.
Brenda Evens Hart, '74, of Houston, has accepted a position
with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston as administrator of education
and risk analysis. |
Patricio G. Quintana, '74, of Las Cruces, provost emeritus of Dona
Ana Branch Community College, has been named a recipient of the Distinguished
Alumnus Award from the New Mexico Highlands University Alumni Association
Homecoming Committee. The award cites Quintana's contributions to the
development of the institution located in Las Vegas, N.M.
Maj. David L. Stock, '74, of Bloomfield, N.M., was one of two grand
marshals for a Veterans' Day Parade hosted by most of the veterans organizations
in San Juan County and the city of Aztec, N.M. Stock served in Vietnam
February 1968 through February 1969 and is a highly decorated veteran.
Stock flew more than 950 combat mission hours and earned a battlefield
commission as a first lieutenant.
Wade Coplen, '75, '81, of Arlington, Va., was recently selected
as an Understanding Teaching Instructional Specialist with the Department
of Staff Development for the Montgomery County, Md., Public Schools. Coplen
joins a cadre that delivers a course developed by Research for Better
Teaching Inc., and is available to more than 9,000 teachers. For the past
10 years, Coplen has served as an instructional support teacher and elementary
assistant principal.

Orlando T. Padilla,
'76, of Deming, N.M., was selected as one of the 100 Most Influential
Hispanics by Hispanic Business Magazine. Padilla has been with General
Motors since 1976. He played a big role in establishing a plant
in Shanghai and is director of the company's Public Policy Center.
Allan L. Paul, '76, of Alamogordo, N.M., completed two Ironman
class triathlons. The first was in July 2000, the Ironman USA in
Lake Placid, and the second in August 2000, the Ironman Canada.
Michael R. Gabaldon, '77, of Albuquerque, has been named
the new deputy director of operations for the Bureau of Reclamation,
which is part of the federal Interior Department. |
Gabaldon and the bureau director share responsibility for planning and
executing operational program functions.
Robert M. Gallagher, '77, of Rio Rancho, N.M., was selected as president
of New Mexico Oil and Gas Association in January 2000. As president, he
is the chief executive of the association made up of 250 member companies.
Prior to joining NMOGA, Gallagher was appointed by President Clinton to
serve as a principal adviser for oil and gas to the secretary of energy.
Mike White, '77, of Dexter, N.M., was re-elected as first vice
president of the N.M. Farm and Livestock Bureau at the organization's
83rd annual meeting in Las Cruces.
Larry Bell, '78, of Santa Fe, was named director of the New Mexico
Department of Game and Fish at the game commission's September meeting
in Albuquerque. Bell has been with Game and Fish since 1978 when he began
training in Raton.
Terri Flickinger, '78, '82, of El Paso, Texas, was selected as
Socorro Independent School District's Secondary Teacher of the Year for
2000-2001.
Woods E. Houghton, '78, of Carlsbad, N.M., was named Eddy County's
Outstanding Ag Person of the Year. The award was given at the Eddy County
Farm and Livestock Bureau's annual meeting in October. Houghton is acting
program director and extension agricultural agent. Houghton was also nominated
for Eddy County Citizen of the Year. Greg Maxwell, '78, of Kingwood,
Texas, is now the vice president and controller of Chevron Phillips Chemical
Co. He was previously general auditor for Phillips Petroleum Co. and finance
manager of plastics for Phillips Chemical Co. Beth Hellwig-Olson,
'78, of Spokane, Wash., is the dean of student services at Gonzaga University,
a Jesuit school in Spokane, Wash. Previously, Hellwig-Olson worked at
the University of Colorado as the director of student life. Kathryn
R. Hood, '79, of El Paso, Texas, has been promoted to treasurer of
El Paso Electric Co. Hood has been with El Paso Electric for 18 years.

Michael W. Altum, '80, of Santa Fe, was promoted to senior vice
president of loan administration at First State Bank. Altum has been
with First State Bank since 1989 and has worked in the banking and financial
services industry since 1980.
Alan C. Barron, '82, of Plano, Texas, is the director of engineering
for Lucent Technologies Micro-Optical Electronics Division in the Dallas
office.
David Dohmann, '82, of Albuquerque, has been promoted to creative
director at Wright Edge Corp. He is also chief copywriter for Results,
a monthly marketing guide and campaign planner for Tel-Edge, a Wright
Edge division. Dohmann has been with the company for 14 years.
Mike Hanagan, '82, of San Antonio, N.M., was named the Ag Teacher
of the Year by the New Mexico Ag Teachers at the association's meeting
in July. In the six years Hanagan has taught in Artesia, N.M., his ag
students have won five State Leadership Sweepstakes Awards and two Production
Sweepstakes Awards.

Scott W. Honeyfield, '82, of El Paso, Texas,
has prepared studies and designed many major civil engineering projects
for east Texas and Panhandle area communities since joining Parkhill
Smith & Cooper Inc. (PSC) in 1982. He is the project manager in
the firm's Amarillo office.
Allan Lemley, '82, of Ranchos de Taos, N.M., is a customer
service representative for the Carson National Forest near Taos.
Patrick Rooney, '82, of Louisville, Col., released a CD titled
"Melting Sun." Rooney played in the NMSU Jazz Band while he was
a student.

Bill Sharer, '82, of Farmington, N.M., was elected to the state
senate. Sharer received his Army commission from New Mexico Military Institute
and served in the New Mexico National Guard while finishing school.
Janice Stevenson, '82, of El Paso, Texas, is the new district ranger
at the Quemado Ranger District, Gila National Forest. Stevenson will be
responsible for managing the Quemado District located on the north end
of the forest. Stevenson has a 20-year forest service career that started
at the Coronado National Forest where she worked under the cooperative
education program as a wildlife biologist.
Evangelina G. Martinez, '83, of Anthony, N.M., a teacher at Davenport
Elementary, has been a teacher for 35 years. Martinez made Who's Who in
American Colleges and Universities and Who's Who Among America's Teachers
2000. She was recently nominated as Teacher for the Day in the El Paso
Times.
Jackie Kerby Moore, '83, of Albuquerque, is manager of Sandia Science
& Technology Park. Moore recruits tenants to the park and secures funding
for this research park facility. She is also active with United Way and
Camp Fire Boys and Girls in the Albuquerque area.
Judge Glen Ellington, '84, of Los Alamos, N.M., became chief counsel
for the state Taxation and Revenue Department. Ellington will oversee
the legal division of the tax department.
Libbye A. Morris-Belgrade, '85, of Sterling, Va., is a free-lance
writer and editor in the Washington, D.C., metro area and is founder of
the Sterling, Va., Writer's Group.
Joseph M. Lujan, '85, of Albuquerque, is on the board of the Albuquerque
Hispano Chamber of Commerce and the Independent Insurance Agents of New
Mexico. Lujan is also active in coaching youth sports. Earlier this year
he was recognized by New Mexico Business Weekly as one of their 40 under
40.
Wayne Moore, '85, of Animas, N.M., FFA chapter adviser at Animas
High School, has been awarded the New Mexico Department of Agriculture
Education's NMAETA Outstanding Young Member Award. Moore has participated
in state and national FFA and Agricultural Education Teachers Association
activities since 1996.
Joseph W. Neale, '85, of Overland Park, Kan., started his new assignment
as electrical startup manager at the Tuas A Power Station Stage II Development
in Singapore. The project consists of the construction of an 800 megawatt
combined cycle power plant. Neale's son just started at NMSU, making him
a fourth-generation Aggie.
Adrienne D. Tadian, '85, of Peralta, N.M., was named senior account
administrator by Retirement Strategies LLC. Tadian is a certified public
accountant. Before joining Retirement Strategies she was lead consultant
in the defined contribution area for a pension administration firm in
Albuquerque.
Arnold V. Cordova, '86, of Albuquerque, has been promoted to vice
president of membership at the Association of Commerce & Industry of New
Mexico. Cordova has been membership director for three years and has produced
record-setting membership growth.
Annette V. Hayden, '86, of Santa Fe, has been promoted to principal
of Barraclough & Associates P.C., Certified Public Accountants and Consultants.
Hayden has been with the firm since 1989.
Randy Worley, '86, of Cottonwood, N.M., has been hired as general
manager of the New Mexico Alderman-Cave's Roswell, N.M., mill. Worley
has extensive experience in many areas of New Mexico agriculture.
Robert Torres, '87, of Las Cruces, an associate professor of agricultural
and extension education at NMSU, received the 2000 Regional Food and Agricultural
Sciences Excellence in College and University Teaching Award from the
National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. The
award is the highest teaching recognition that a faculty member can receive
in agriculture.
Mark E. Martinez, '88, '90, of Des Moines, Iowa, has been promoted
to business manager of Kemin's Ruminant Division. Martinez will be responsible
for Kemin's commercial operations in the ruminant industry. Prior to this
promotion, Martinez was regional sales manager in the same company.
Loretta Griego, '89, of La Madera, N.M., is the new Dona Ana County
health care facilitator/planner. Griego will serve as the liaison for
the county's Health Program Department, county commission and the Health
Advisory Council. Paul Lenko, '89, of Scottsdale, Ariz., has joined
Mayo Clinic Scottsdale as a project manager in its Information Services
Department. Mayo Clinic Scottsdale is one of three Mayo Clinic campuses.

Mike Antiporda, '90, of Carlsbad, N.M., joined the Westinghouse
Waste Isolation Division in Carlsbad. Antiporda works in the Communications
Department of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant's management and operations
contractor. He has worked on WIPP related projects for the last seven
and a half years.
James Dickey, '90, of Las Cruces, has joined the staff of Memorial
Medical Center as director of managed care and physician relations.
Dickey, who has 10 years of health care experience, has served as director
of business development for HEALTH SOUTH Rehabilitation Hospital in
Albuquerque and in the managed care, marketing and planning department
of St. Joseph Healthcare in Albuquerque.
Michelle Hedrick, '90, of Corrales, N.M., was named Environmental
Safety and Occupational Health Professional of the Year. Hedrick is
a safety and environmental engineer at the Directed Energy Directorate
of the Air Force Research Laboratory in Kirtland Air Force Base in New
Mexico. This award is for the laboratory's 10 nationwide sites.
Cristina Moody Lenko, '90, of Scottsdale, Ariz., has joined URS
Dames & Moore as a public involvement specialist. She is assigned to
Valley Connections, part of the mass-transit authority for Phoenix and
Maricopa County, Ariz. Her responsibilities include coordination of
public information for the City of Tempe related to the Valley Light
Rail project.
Kathleen Romero Kemp, '90, of Albuquerque, has been named membership
sales manager at the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau. Previously
she served as an account manager at Norstan Communications.
William Andrews, '91, of Riverside, Calif., is Porterville Community
College's new president. Before serving at Riverside, Andrews was vice
president of instruction at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo from
1995 to 1998. From 1991 to 1995 he was the director of planning, research
and development at South Orange County Community College.
Jacob Armijo, '91, of Belen, N.M., was hired by First State Bank
as assistant vice president and manager of the bank's Belen branch.
Previously Armijo worked for Norwest and Sunwest banks.
Eileen Patterson, '91, of Los Alamos, N.M., a technical writer-editor
at Los Alamos National Laboratory, won a laboratory award (the LA Award)
in December 2000 for aiding fellow employees who were victims of the
Cerro Grande fire in May. Patterson and two other members of the Communications
Arts and Services Group organized fund-raising activities for group
members who lost their homes or suffered severe fire damage.
John Sloan, '91, of Las Cruces, was hired as an agri-business loan
officer at State National bank. Sloan has an extensive background in
the agri-banking industry with more than 10 years of experience.
Jon K. Stanford, '91, of Albuquerque, has joined Modrall Sperling
Roehl Harris & Sisk P.A. as an associate in the Natural Resources Department.
Olsen will focus his practice on natural resource law and litigation.
Dave Weidauer, '91, of Rio Rancho, N.M., was promoted to office
operations manager at Sandia Federal Credit Union. He will oversee performance
and management at Sandia Area's four branch offices. Weidauer joined
the credit union in 1988.
Jean Beaupre, '92, of Cincinnati, Ohio, won the Johnson Medal
for Research and Development, the highest honor for research and development
given by the Johnson & Johnson Co. Beaupre received this award for work
on the harmonic scalpel (an Ultrasonic blade), which stops bleeding
as it cuts. Though Beaupre did not invent it, he did find a way to make
complex curves run efficiently, which had been considered impossible
by the industry.
Olivia Carrasco, '93, of Las Cruces, has been named public relations
specialist for the New Mexico Department of Agriculture. Carrasco will
be responsible for writing news releases and publications, organizing
and photographing special events and other media-related tasks.
Michael Scanlon, '93, formerly of Las Cruces, was named editor
of the Ruidoso News. Scanlon was business editor of the Las Cruces Sun-News
for nearly four years.
Katy Enriquez, '94, '95, of Las Cruces, has been selected to
head a new service provided by the NMSU Police Department. The Police
Department will send out e-mail bulletins to subscribers containing
crime prevention tips. Lt. Enriquez has been an officer at NMSU for
more than five years. She has received specialized training in crime
prevention measures and strategies.
Christopher W. Hickman, '94, of Los Lunas, N.M., recently won
the Walter Fee Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year Award from the
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
Darrell C. Partin, '94, of Chester, Va., was recently the choral
director at the Petersburg Music Festival.
Sandy Cassen, '96, '98, of Las Cruces, is one of two NMSU agents
for the Torrance County Cooperative Extension Service. Cassen began
work on Sept. 5, 2000, as the county's home economist.
Elias Estrada, '97, of Deming, N.M., is a new commercial insurance
account executive for First Security Insurance at its Las Cruces office.
Lisa McCormack, '97, of Eagle River, Ark., a first lieutenant in
the U.S. Air Force, received the Airlift/Tanker Association Young Leadership
Award at a symposium in Anaheim, Calif.
April C. Padilla, '98, of Las Cruces, is the program coordinator/AmeriCorps
director at Mesilla Valley Youth Foundation Court Youth Center in Las
Cruces.
David E. Ramos, '98, of Greenville, Del., is an engineering specialist
at Orbital Engineering Inc. Ramos is part of an electrical and instrumentation
design team.
Raquel Vigil, '99, of Espanola, N.M., was recently hired as a
media buyer for Shonkwiler-Marcoux Advertising in Las Vegas, Nev. Vigil
has been with the agency for a few months.

The winter 2000 Aggie Panorama contained incorrect
information about the current employment of Distinguished Alumna
Kay Cargill Jenkins, '77, '86, from the College of Health and
Social Services. She is an attorney with the law firm of Kemp,
Smith, Duncan & Hammond in El Paso, Texas. Jenkins, who focuses
on medical malpractice defense and health law, earned her associate's
and bachelor's degrees in nursing from NMSU and worked as a professional
nurse before earning her doctor of jurisprudence degree at the
University of Texas at Austin in 1988.
