Steven Pasternack |
Family, friends and former students of the late journalism professor and Department Head Steven Pasternack have established a scholarship fund in his memory. The fund will support students majoring in journalism who are residents of New Mexico or New York and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Preference will be given to students whose interests lie in improving the lives of people in Africa, Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia. The Scholarship Committee in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications will select the recipients in consultation with the head of the department.
Pasternack, who passed away in June 2004, championed free press initiatives in Third World countries. A Fulbright fellowship took him to Rwanda for the first time in 1998 and an almost instant bond with that country found him returning several times in the intervening years.
While the fund has surpassed the amount needed to create a permanent endowment, gifts from individuals whose lives were impacted by Pasternack will increase the amount available to award each year. Anyone interested in supporting the endowment can use the coupon on page 24 to make a gift to the NMSU Foundation or go online to giving.nmsu.edu |
