The Pan American Center renovation in progress. Photo by Ben La Marca
A little more than a year after the $23.5 million renovation of New Mexico State University’s Pan American Center began in October 2005, the refurbished landmark is scheduled to reopen in November with greatly improved access and amenities and more modern and competitive athletic team facilities.

Visitors will find a new concourse that’s about 20 feet wide under the upper level bench seats; seven concession stands, six of them brand new; two elevators providing access from the south lobby to court level; new ADA-compliant seating and handrails on the concourse and court levels; and additional chair back seating instead of benches where the old concourse existed.

The Pan Am Center, which used to have a total of eight restrooms, will now have 18 – 10 for women, seven for men and a family facility, all on the concourse.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team will have new practice facilities and locker rooms; musical stars and other performers will use upgraded dressing facilities; and coaches, the Pan American Center staff and emergency medical technicians will get new offices with more room for supplies.

“We’ll be open for basketball season and hopefully, we’ll be able to have most of the volleyball games played in there, too,” says University Architect Michael Rickenbaker, adding that the university will be able to showcase the Pan Am Center to the entire Western Athletic Conference when NMSU hosts the men’s and women’s WAC basketball tournaments in March 2007.
