In honor of his long career of service to Alamogordo and the state of New Mexico, the family of George Fettinger has donated $100,000 to New Mexico State University-Alamogordo to establish an endowed scholarship for the community college’s nursing program.

Fettinger, who passed away in 2003, was born in New York in 1929. He served as a fighter pilot in the Air Force and was discharged in 1955 while stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. He graduated from law school at the University of New Mexico in 1958 and joined the law firm of Brenton, Boyce, Wilkinson and Otto in Alamogordo, beginning a 40-year legal career. He was nationally recognized in the field of Indian law and successfully argued two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Fettinger was active in the community, holding key positions at First National Bank in Alamogordo as well as in several local civic organizations. He was first elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives in 1963 and served for 20 years. During his tenure, he was a primary force in establishing the state’s community colleges. The student services center at the Alamogordo campus of NMSU was named in his honor.

This new scholarship will support nursing students who have been accepted into the associate degree program at the Alamogordo campus. Every third year, preference will be given to a member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe.
