The Aggie Equestrian Team began the 2005-06 season as an unknown in the equestrian world, but they quickly rose to the top of the national spotlight. One of the rising stars for the Aggies is hunt seat rider Krystal Mack.
In only its second year as a varsity sport, the Aggies have had the Cacchione Cup winner both years, as Mack won the prestigious award as a freshman in 2005 and then defended her title in 2006. Mack also was named Open Fences Champion in the region, as well as Reserve Champion in Open Flat. The Cacchione Cup is given to the region’s high-point rider for the season.
“It was an honor to be able to repeat as the Cacchione Cup rider for the region,” Mack says. “This year was extremely tough because I had two of my own teammates to compete against, plus I was battling back problems for the last month of the season. But everything came together in the end.”
The native of Albuquerque is excited about her accomplishments, but feels that winning the Cacchione Cup for the second time is better for the team’s overall goal of winning NMSU’s first national championship. After a year of experience under her belt, Mack came into the season a more confident rider.
“I knew what it would take to win the Cacchione Cup and it really helps the team more in achieving our goal of winning a national championship,” Mack says. “The team comes first and this honor is for the Aggies. We have riders on this team that are capable of accumulating big numbers and I’m proud to be a part of this program and laying the ground- work for a national championship team.”
Mack says that from the first moment she got in the saddle when she was nine years old in California, riding horses has been her passion and love. Now, as a sophomore with the Aggies, Mack earned an automatic spot at Nationals in the Cacchione Cup competition.
