John (Jack) E. Hirten ’50 of San Francisco, Calif., received the 2005 American Planning Association (APA) Lifetime Achievement Award for Exceptional Service to APA and the planning profession.

Carlton “Pat” Patterson ’51 and Betty Roby Patterson ’44 of Oakdale, Calif., celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Pat is one of the original members of the Aggie Rodeo team.

Ellis B. Scott ’56 ’58 ’69 and Shirley Earhart Scott ’56 of Albuquerque celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 31, 2005. Nine former NMSU classmates attended the party given by daughters Dacia Scott Roberts ’82 and Donette Scott Wagner ’80 and son, Steve.
Buddy L. Jensen ’69 ’71 of Bristow, Va., was named to the National Register’s “Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals of America.” Jensen serves as the chief of hatchery operations for the National Fish Hatchery System, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Washington, D.C. Jensen worked at five field stations in Arizona and New Mexico for 30 years prior to his current position in the national office.
Guy Phillips ’75 of St. Louis, Mo., was inducted into the St. Louis Radio Hall of Fame. Phillips has received the Ronald McDonald House “Hero of the Heart” award, “Man of the Year” award by the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation and has been named “Mr. St. Louis” through a mayoral proclamation.

Steven M. Bower ’77 of Albuquerque recently retired as a colonel after 28 years of commissioned service in the U.S Air Force. Bower was most recently the vice commander of the 377th Air Base Wing at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. He is currently the director of defense systems and services for Akima Tech-Link LLC in Albuquerque.

Mary F. Kamoss ’78 of Albuquerque received a master’s degree in education curriculum and instructional leadership from the College of Santa Fe. Kamoss is teaching remedial classes at Youth Development Inc. in Albuquerque.

Mario Acevedo ’79 of Denver, Colo., had his first novel “The Nymphos of Rocky Flats” published by HarperCollins.
Michael H. Erfert ’80 of Yuma, Ariz., retired from the Yuma Police Department after 26 years of service. He was the quality assurance bureau commander. Erfert will now serve as public information officer for the Yuma Fire Department.

Nancy Martinez ’81 of Phoenix, Ariz., has been named assistant to the regional director of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in the Phoenix Regional Office. Martinez entered public service in 1977 as a co-op student with the Small Business Administration, joined NLRB as a field examiner and was then promoted to supervisory field examiner.

Steven P. Castillo ’82 of Las Cruces was appointed to the National Science Foundation’s Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure by foundation director Arden Bement. Castillo is the dean of NMSU’s College of Engineering.

Alfred Flores ’82 of Baltimore, Md., is the new director of Transnational Onboard Life with The Scholar Ship.

Jeffrey D. Grigsby ’82 of Albany, Ind., was appointed chair of the Department of Geology at Ball State University. Grigsby joined the faculty at Ball State in 1992 after spending three years at the Bureau of Economic Geology, University of Texas at Austin.

James Vincent O’Brien ’82 of Mystic, Conn., has won Monsanto’s Science and Technology Career Award. O’Brien was recognized for his valued contributions in science and research operations.

Beverly Clayshulte ’82 ’98 of Mesilla, N.M., has been published in the Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, Self Magazine and was filmed by the Discovery Health Channel for her research on the health benefits of pecans. Clayshulte is the owner of Healthy Weighs-Medical Nutrition Therapy in Las Cruces.

Sylvia Meyers-Grace ’82 ’95 of Gilbert, Ariz., was awarded a national $25,000 prize from the Milken Family Foundation. Meyers-Grace has worked as an engineer for IBM, taught at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces and has been teaching high school in Gilbert, Ariz., for the past four years.

Brett A. Kasten ’82 ’85 of Silver City, N.M., was elected chairman of the board of First New Mexico Bank of Silver City. Kasten is president of Porter Transportation, secretary/treasurer of Porter Oil and joined First New Mexico Bank in 2002 as a director.

Perry L. Elders ’84 of Houston, Texas, was appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer at Bristow Group Inc. Elders previously worked for Sirius Solutions, Vetco International Limited, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Arthur Andersen. Elders is a certified public accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Britt L. Porter ’85 of El Paso, Texas, has joined Bank of the West in the Wealth Management Department as the vice president and wealth management advisor. Porter also is president of the El Paso Estate Planning Council.

Steven M. Alderete ’86 of Albuquerque was promoted to senior electronics engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Directed Energy Directorate, Technology Applications Division, Advanced Systems Assessment Branch, at Kirtland AFB.

Robert B. Cullins ’86 of Tokyo, Japan, is the new president and CEO of Maxxium Japan. Maxxium is a global leader in fine wine and luxury spirits production, marketing and distribution.

Charles G. Perez ’86 of Brunswick, Md., has been promoted to program manager of the Customs and Border Protection Headquarters, Washington, D.C., Advance Passenger Information Systems.

Delvin Armijo ’88 of Los Angeles, Calif., won an Emmy Award for “1 Hr. 10 Year Anniversary Special” that aired on KNBC. Armijo currently works for KNBC-TV and has previously worked at KCBS, KCOP, KCAL, E!, KTTV and KNBC-TV.

Nancy S. Bufano ’89 of Alexandria, Va., has been promoted to food technologist in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition in College Park, Md. Bufano previously served as an agricultural marketing specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., and as a consumer safety officer with the FDA.

Jeff Cain ’89 of Albuquerque has joined Sandia Area Federal Credit Union as vice president of marketing. Cain has been a marketing professional in Albuquerque for 15 years, the last 12 in financial services.

Arthur A. Johnson ’89 of Albuquerque has been appointed vice president of sales for Next Phase Enterprises in Phoenix, Ariz. Johnson previously worked with Stockpot Inc., United Signature Foods, Chef America Inc. and Nestle USA.
Robert Garza ’90 of Las Cruces has been promoted to assistant city manager for the city of Las Cruces. Garza started out as an engineering co-op student, then served as engineering technician, public works director and interim assistant city manager.

Harry Miles ’90 of Las Cruces has been promoted to vice president of Enterprise Process Development and Quality for the Ship Systems sector of Northrop Grumman Corp. Miles helped achieve substantial savings in production, supply chain, legal and human resources operations by implementing Six Sigma methods, coaching process improvement teams, defining processes and helping to develop common tolls for measuring performance against objectives.

James S. Rutley ’90 of Carlsbad, N.M., has been promoted to surface shirt supervisor at MOSAIC in Carlsbad.

Pat Havard ’91 of Carlsbad, N.M., has been honored by “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” Havard is a fourth grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary in Carlsbad.

Rene Ruiz ’91 of Las Cruces has been promoted to vice president of commercial banking for Bank of the Rio Grande. Ruiz is a member of the Las Cruces Homebuilders Association, the Lions Club and ARC of Las Cruces. He is currently attending the Southwest Graduate School of Banking in Dallas.

Claire A. Shervanick ’91 of Fairfield, Calif., currently serves with the 506th Expeditionary Medical Squadron in Kirkuk, Iraq.

Tony Silva ’91 of Washington, D.C., was promoted to senior vice president expert in social marketing, public relations and strategic communications for ICF Consulting, Washington, D.C. Prior to joining ICF Consulting, Silva worked for Hill & Knowlton and for two non-profit health care organizations.

Manuel G. Griego ’92 of Beavercreek, Ohio, is in Wright Patterson AFB completing a one year master’s program in systems engineering.

Steve E. Merrill ’92 of Cedar Park, Texas, joined Corporate Executive Boards (EXBD) as an associate director of sales and marketing. Merrill previously served as a national services sales manager with DELL Inc.

Laura M. Yellig ’92 of Houston, Texas, has returned to work as manager of retail operations support for Shell Oil.

Lisa McKinney ’93 of Carlsbad, N.M., has been honored in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” McKinney is a kindergarten teacher at the Early Childhood Education Center in Carlsbad.

Shelton Dodson ’94 of Albuquerque has been named co-anchor of “Eyewitness News 4 Today.” Dodson has worked in El Paso, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, and Albuquerque.

Jamie P. Estrada ’95 of Arlington, Va., has been appointed by President George W. Bush as deputy assistant secretary for manufacturing at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Estrada previously worked at the Intel Corp. and was the northern New Mexico political director for Bush-Cheney.

Gene C. Barrett ’96 of Akron, Ohio, received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron Law School in May 2004.

Dwayne Benefield ’96 of Los Angeles has been promoted to vice president of strategy and business development at Walt Disney International. Benefield has served as director of business planning and development and manager of finance planning for Walt Disney International, and an analyst within corporate finance for The Walt Disney Company.

Kimberly Moss ’96 of Albuquerque has been promoted by DW Turner Strategic Communications to senior account executive.

Anthony Michael Flammia ’97 of Elkton, Md., has joined the Department of Homeland Security/Customs and Border Protection as an agriculture specialist. Flammia was awarded a Distinguished Student Status after graduating Officer Training.

Cal Baca ’97 and Jacqueline Baca ’02 of Santa Fe, N.M., celebrated their one year anniversary in February 2006. Cal is the private land programs manager with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and Jacqueline is the 4-H home economist with NMSU’s Cooperative Extension Service for Santa Fe County.

Ronnie Garver ’97 of Hollister, Calif., has joined Redbeard Communications as a graphic designer after working for NMSU for eight years. When he left he was assistant director of University Communications for Publications.

Kevin Marvel ’97 of Alexandria, Va., has been selected at the executive officer of the American Astronomical Society. Marvel was a postdoctoral researcher at Owens Valley Radio Observatory of the California Institute of Technology.

A.J. Eathorne ’98 and Alena Sharp ’03, Ladies Professional Golf Association members, will compete for nearly $50 million in prize money in 34 tournaments as part of the preeminent women’s professional golf tour. Eathorne and Sharp are graduates of the College of Business.

Robert N. Harrison ’98 is a board-certified chiropractic physician and a certified provider of active release technique and Graston soft tissue mobilization technique. Harrison, an avid adventure racer and tri-athlete, was asked to be part of the 2005 Ironman Arizona Triathlon treatment team in Tempe, Ariz.

Melissa L. Decker ’99 of Green Bay, Wis., received her master’s degree in science for applied leadership for teaching and learning from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Decker is a sixth grade teacher in the Howard Suamico School District in Green Bay.

Cyrus Salazar ’99 ’01 of Washington, D. C., employment program manager for the National Institutes of Health, has been selected by the editors of Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology for the prestigious 100 Most Important Hispanics in Technology and Business list for 2006. Salazar served as ASNMSU president in 1998-99 and is featured here in this issue.
Amanday J. Barney ’01 of Belen, N.M., has joined Signature Resources, an affiliate of John Hancock Financial Services, as a financial representative. Barney has more than four years’ experience in the insurance and financial services fields.

Brandon Miller ’04 of Albuquerque has joined the assurance division at Grant Thornton LLP.

Leah Cooper ’05 of Albuquerque was honored at the Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Awards ceremony in April 2006. Cooper volunteers at the Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center and has given her time to the Albuquerque Pre-School for the Deaf, Second Chances and ACCION New Mexico. A member of the Young Leaders Society of United Way, Cooper works for the Wellness, Alcohol and Violence Education Center at NMSU.

Patrick M. Dixon ’05 of San Rafael, N.M., received the Marshall Scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies in Great Britain in the fall. He spent a semester abroad at the University of Budapest.

Laura Beltran ’05 of Las Cruces has joined Meyners + Co. as an accountant in the tax department.
