Alumni Association
recognizes accomplished grads

The NMSU Alumni Association honored the 2000 Distinguished Alumni and James F. Cole Memorial Award recipients at a luncheon during NMSU's Homecoming celebration in October.

The James F. Cole Memorial Award for Service was presented to John "Jac" Oestreicher. He was instrumental in raising $550,000 for NMSU's Coca-Cola Weight Room. He was a founder of the US West Aggie-Lobo Shoot-out golf tournament, which raised over $85,000 for scholarships. Oestreicher is a past president and founding member of the Albuquerque chapter of the Aggie Scholarship Association.

Distinguished Alumni awards are given each year to individuals who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields and brought recognition to NMSU. The 2000 honorees are:

Carl Faubion, '50, College of Agriculture and Home Economics. Faubion earned his bachelor's in agriculture in 1950. He also was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1988 during NMSU's centennial celebration. He lives in Las Cruces.

Gary King, '76, College of Arts and Sciences. King, of Moriarty, N.M., is a 12-year member of the New Mexico House of Representatives. King received his bachelor's degree in chemistry.

Philip W. Cook, '84, College of Business Administration and Economics. Cook lives in Houston and is the vice president of Burlington Resources. He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting.

Thomas Esparza III, '89, College of Education. He was named the Las Cruces Public Schools Teacher of the Year 2000. He earned his bachelor's degree in science in secondary health physical education.

Walter Hines, '66, '67, College of Engineering. Hines lives in Albuquerque and is a senior engineer at CH2M, an engineering consulting firm. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

Kay Cargill Jenkins, '77, '86, College of Health and Social Services. She is the supervisor of the cardiac/trauma unit at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. Jenkins, who lives in El Paso, Texas, holds associate's and bachelor's degrees in nursing.

Anibal Pordomingo, '90, International Distinguished Alumnus. Pordomingo, of La Pampa, Argentina, is known as an international ambassador for NMSU. While at NMSU he was an International Rotary Scholar and completed his master's and doctorate in three years.

Bruce and Jan Firkins and William Clark celebrate the completion of the Firkins Fine Arts Stage. The couple enabled NMSU to build the stage in honor of Clark, retired head of the NMSU music department.

Walking in the Homecoming parade is Miss Indian NMSU Melanie Long, a Navajo and senior nursing student from Ganado, Ariz.
A float sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha and Sigma Alpha Epsilon captures the theme of Homecoming 2000, "NMSU: Where Dreams Become Reality." The NMSU football team fulfilled fans' dreams by defeating Tulsa 42-28.
