Senior Send-Off

On July 30, Hal and Flossie Hopson helped us with a Senior Send-Off for Silver High graduates headed to New Mexico State in August. What a great group of students! Area alumni hosted the hamburger fry for the soon-to-be freshmen. Even though we had to move indoors as rain threatened overhead, we still had a great time. These folks know how to have a party.

We also chartered the Silver City chapter, which was long overdue. Harold Bray was unanimously voted in as chapter president. Other alumni in attendance were Frank Quarrell ’80, Thomas L. Brake ’78 ’86 and Regina Vendrely ’94.

My thanks to all our alumni in Silver City who helped put this on, and also to Shari Jones ’80, president- elect of the alumni association, and Candace Sitzer ’99.

Chuck Wagon Breakfast
Bill Cantrell and Warren Davis August 2 found us in Tucumcari, N.M., for our second annual Chuck Wagon Breakfast. This year, an early morning shower made it nice and cool. Dean Jerry Schickedanz ’70 gave an update on the Ag college—he always makes it so interesting. Several folks traveled a bit to join us. Bill Cantrell ’67 and Jason Sawyer ’98 joined us from Clayton. Joan ’49 and Carl Faubion ’50 were in town for the Rattler Reunion, so they came over for breakfast. Rex Kirksey ’80 and his crew did a great job of putting out the tables and keeping them dry. Chihuahua, Mexico On August 3, Ermelinda Quintela ’88 ’89 ’94, Provost Bill Flores, Dean Schickedanz ’70, and myself set out for Chihuahua. We had a good turnout of alumni.

Chihuahua, Mexico

On August 3, Ermelinda Quintela ’88 ’89 ’94, Provost Bill Flores, Dean Schickedanz ’70, and myself set out for Chihuahua. We had a good turnout of alumni. This first chapter in Mexico is raring to go and wants to challenge other chapters to keep up. Alejandro Ramirez ’99 was elected president and everyone promised to help him. They organized an event in Casas Grandes in September and one in Chihuahua in October in conjunction with the State Fair.

Before we did all the chapter work we had a wonderful lunch at La Calesa, where we heard stories about time spent at the Cork and Bottle, Dick’s and, of course, La Posta.

Aggie Experience

In 1898, the Alumni Association began with three goals: to maintain records on graduates, recruit quality high school students and feed the senior class.

We are fortunate that our founders, A.M. Holt, Oscar Snow, Fabian Garcia, Albert Peterson, Ed Holt and Joseph Bennett, had the foresight also to look toward recruiting and contacting high school seniors before they left high school. This semester, the Alumni Association helped with “Aggie Experience,” where high school seniors from all over the state were invited to come to campus, meet faculty, go to a football game, have dinner and dance. The games were exciting, especially when we beat UNM and UTEP. We hope that by seeing our warm, inviting campus, these students will enroll at State next fall.

On October 23 and 24, we co-sponsored Grad Fair 2002. Graduating New Mexico State seniors will come to the one-stop graduation fair, where they can take care of everything for fall graduation in one day— even those who have forgotten to sign up with the registrar’s office.

Last spring we had 400 seniors stop by, fill out paperwork, buy rings, order graduation announcements and just visit with alumni.

Aggie Tailgates

The Alumni Association sponsored a tailgate before each home game this fall. Attendance improves with each game.

Georgia

Wow, what a first quarter! The Aggies showed the Bulldogs we could put points on the board. And even better than the game was our pre-game party.

Marie Stoy ’92 rallied the Aggies and we had 50 fans join us at the Holiday Inn, Athens, for burgers and dogs, after which we went to the game as a group.

Marie is the Georgia Chapter president and she has organized a Web site for all Georgia alumni at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nmsu_georgia/. The next event is a barbecue in November.

Berkeley

The Aggies played the UC Berkeley Bears on Saturday, September 7. More than 50 Aggie fans met at Compadres Bar and Grill for California’s best fajitas and margaritas.

The bus picked us up, took us to the game and then got everyone back to Compadres. What a way to attend games where they have no parking.

My thanks to Jack Burleson ’44, Bay Area president, Mike Rogers ’74, Charlie Rogers ’63 and Pervis Atkins ’62 for all their help.

New Orleans Bowl

The Aggies are off to a great season, beating UNM and UTEP and posting W’s in the win column for our conference. We may be headed to the New Orleans Bowl on December 17. Check our stats and keep your calendar open—what a great place to go in December.

Hall of Fame

The Athletics Hall of Fame will honor the Aggie Baskeball team of ’37 this spring. We know several have gone on to greener pastures, but we would like to have someone represent all players. If you or someone you know played in ’37, please let us know and make plans to join us. Names of record on the team are Kiko Martinez, Hookey Apodaca, Frank Kozeliski, Jimmy Apodaca, Morris Wood, Clayborne Wayne, Marshall Fuller, Howard Ball, Morton Coffman, Pecos Finley, Lauro Apodaca, Joe Jackson and Fuston Stevens.

Aggie Round Up

Otis Farmer and Joe Parker

The Dona Ana Aggie Alumni Chapter held its second annual Aggie Round Up on September 14. The event was a huge success.

William ’56 and Sible Tharp took the buckles at arena golf. Rusty Gray and Mike Black ’02 were the winners at the horseshoes. For the washers, our winners were Otis Farmer and Joe Parker ’50. The winners of the buckles for the team roping were Bill Snure, a current NMSU student, and Nano Garza.

Thanks to Geraldine Calhoun ’58 for the great food and to Denny Calhoun ’62 for all his hard work, and to both for the new dance floor and for opening their home to all the alumni and friends who attended. Our thanks also to all our alumni in attendance.
