2000 Grad Back as First Varsity Equestrian Coach By Rachel Gallagher
Pamela Bruemmer
It’s a season of firsts for the NMSU equestrian team.

The team, which was previously a club program, is in its first season as a varsity sport and has its first varsity head coach.

Pamela Bruemmer, who was named head coach of the team in August, was most recently the associate head coach for Texas A&M’s equestrian team, but she’s no stranger to NMSU. Before completing a master’s degree in education from NMSU in 2000, she served as the equestrian club’s assistant coach from 1997-2001.

While at Texas A&M, Bruemmer coached the English team to a sixth place finish at the 2004 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships, its best finish ever.

Bruemmer says she’s enthusiastic about joining the NMSU team, which has been successful as a club program. NMSU’s western team placed eighth out of 18 teams at the 2004 IHSA championships. The western team also earned the stock seat championships in 1995 and 1998 and finished as runner-up in 1997.

“I know these students are ready to work hard and are excited about being part of this program. That, right there, is invaluable,” Bruemmer says. “There is a lot of talent. Now it’s my and Kristen Thomas’ (the assistant coach) job to put that talent together and bring out the best athlete in each of the students.”
