| NMSU-Alamogordo to Construct Health Sciences Center |
With the state's recognition of community colleges as a vital force in addressing the need for allied health professionals, NMSU-Alamogordo has received funding to construct a new allied health sciences center.
The multipurpose facility will unite nursing, medical laboratory technician and emergency medical services, enhancing the training and teaching in these fields.
Planning for the center began in 2003 when Rodger Bates, NMSU-A's campus executive officer, developed a plan for an allied health sciences center as a future goal for campus development.
The goal became attainable after House Bill 293 was passed in 2004, setting aside $10 million for the development of career-vocational centers linking area high schools and community colleges.
NMSU-A first received a $75,000 planning grant, and used it to work with Alamogordo Public Schools on a plan to facilitate the training and transition of public school students interested in professional health care programs of the community college. The proposal was approved and funding for the new center was granted after the 2005 legislative session.
"In an example of bipartisan cooperation, Gov. Bill Richardson and state Rep. Terry Marquardt worked together to provide the funding in 2005," Bates said.
Construction on the two-story, 15,000- square-foot center began this past fall. The center will be located on the front side of the campus next to the Rohovec Theater parking lot.
