Pan American Center renovations began in September 2005.
The Pan Am Center, which has welcomed the talents of Bob Hope, Janet Jackson, George Strait, Elton John and many others through the years, has joined other universities in saying what worked in the 1960s will not work in the 21st century.

"The Pan American Center is nearly 40 years old and it's nearing the end of the time when it is competitive with similar facilities in the region," says Will Lofdahl, director of special events at New Mexico State University.

When construction is finished, a new concourse in the facility will allow people to move more freely since it will encircle the facility outside the arena bowl. A new hospitality room will be built, coaches and administrative staff will get new office space, and basketball and volleyball teams will get a new practice court.

Upgrades will help meet the needs of the disabled, electrical and plumbing systems will be modernized, and first aid and security stations will be improved. Furthermore, NMSU's Special Events Department, which shares the Pan Am Center with the Athletics Department, will have new offices.

"The university is very sensitive to the importance the Pan American Center plays within the community," Lofdahl said. "Once the project is completed, the citizens of the region will have a much improved facility for attending events."
